On August 31, Indian Army and SFF troops reached the higher ground of Finger 4, flanking the PLA troops. This move surprised the Chinese, who were on the slopes of Finger 4. The Indian Army's actions in those three days were a big turning point, forcing PLA commanders to take the talks seriously. It took almost six more months to achieve the first disengagements on the north and south banks of Pangong Tso. The defeats of China at Nathu La and Cho La in 1967, along with Sikkim joining India in 1975, have strengthened surveillance over the Tibet Autonomous Region.
