The Economic History of the Last 2,000 Years in 1 Little Graph

That headline is a big promise. But here it is: The economic history of the world going back to Year 1 showing the major powers' share of world GDP, from a research letter written by Michael Cembalest, chairman of market and investment strategy at JP Morgan.

I'm guessing that your first question, if you started scanning from the left, is: Wait, India was by far the biggest economy at the dawn of AD? Yup, India. :coffee:

In Year 1, India and China were home to one-third and one-quarter of the world's population, respectively. It's hardly surprising, then, that they also commanded one-third and one-quarter of the world's economy, respectively.

Before the Industrial Revolution, there wasn't really any such thing as lasting income growth from productivity. In the thousands of years before the Industrial Revolution, civilization was stuck in the Malthusian Trap. If lots of people died, incomes tended to go up, as fewer workers benefited from a stable supply of crops. If lots of people were born, however, incomes would fall, which often led to more deaths. That explains the "trap," and it also explains why populations so closely approximated GDP around the world.

here we find, as per the above post, since history of Humanity the Labour cost of Western countries was 'cheaper' than South Asia till 1818, till the Fall of Maratha's, and the same Labour Cost Difference was somehow-someway maintained till late 1800s, and upto early 1900,...... ☕

India is no more a country than the equator—- well known quote by Winston Churchill summarized the history of India. In another word, India never existed until Britain created it. Prior to that, India was a geopolitical expression like equator.

But this is no big deal. Britain created many nations, such as Canada, South Africa, Jordan and India. All these were created by Britain.India can be a successful country despite it was a British creation. It’s court system use English as the authoritative language. And Indian constitution was written in English.

how you see my post#9 , about "Jai Hind" for the nation, the "Indian Ocean" and "Hind Mahasagar", while "Jai India" is not a used term, 'Jai India' is too poor :)

the term Jai India or India has no future......
India is replacing the name India by 'Bharat', which is already used on many places :coffee:

Bharat: why the recent push to change India’s name has a hidden agenda

The invitations to a state dinner to mark India’s hosting of this year’s G20 came not, as you’d expect, from the office of the president of India, but from thepresident of Bharat. This has prompted speculation from observers both at home and abroad about whether this signifies an official government intention to rename the country.

Will India change its name to Bharat?

EVER SINCE the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014 it has implemented policies to mould India according to its Hindu-nationalist vision. Now it may be poised to implement the most eye-catching change yet: renaming the country. During the G20 summit in Delhi, on September 9th and 10th, Narendra Modi, the prime minister, sat behind a nameplate inscribed with “Bharat”, the Hindi name for India. (y)

The Indian Decimal Place Value System

A Review on Indian Decimal Place Value System-Greatest Indian Contribution to the Development of Mathematics

In this paper, Indian decimal place value system have been discussed which is undoubtedly one of the greatest Indian contributions to the development of mathematics, and its wider applications in all other disciplines. Further I have discussed why this discovery is one of the greatest discoveries and phenomenal development in the decimal place value system has been explained. :coffee:
From the earliest numerate civilization of the Indus valley, Indian scholars led the world in the field of mathematics. Indian scholars created and refined the current decimal place value system of numeration, including the number zero, without which higher mathematics would not be possible. Our modern system of positional decimal notation with zero, together with the basic arithmetic computational schemes, was discovered in India prior to 500 CE. But the work of Indian mathematicians has been severely neglected by western and Eurocentric historians.

Everything about India is interesting.

This is the country they worship rats and elephants and where the world’s software engineers are produced. Mighty skyscrapers sit next to crowded slums. A food exporting nation while nutrition rates are worse than sub-Saharan Africa.

Parts of India are desolate and disconnected from the world ( Nicobar Islands) while the country is one of the premier space powers of the world sending satellites and robots to distant corners of space.

India is a country of contrasts and contradictions.

for US, the Indians are having Household Income at $152,341 as below. isn't it the Culture Background of Indians-Hindus behind that? :)
here the question is, why Americans having so low Household Income at $59,995 here?

Modi 3.0 approves 3 cr more houses under PM Awas Yojana in rural & urban India

New Delhi: The newly formed Union Cabinet Monday approved the proposal to sanction three crore houses in rural and urban areas under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in what was one of the first major decisions of the NDA government in its third term.

The PMAY, in the last 10 years, has ensured 4.21 crore houses for eligible economically poor families, according to the latest government figures.

“It has been decided in the Cabinet meeting today to provide assistance to 3 crore additional rural and urban households for the construction of houses to meet the housing requirements arising out of the increase in the number of eligible families,” read the statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Monday.
Houses constructed under PMAY come with basic amenities such as toilets, LPG connection, electricity connection, functional water tap connection, etc., facilitated under other central and state schemes, said the PMO statement.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, it added, has been working on a plan to bridge the housing gaps in rural and urban areas from last year.

Though the Centre did not give a break-up of the number of houses in rural and urban areas, it will likely provide financial assistance to two crore families in rural areas for houses, according to the interim budget this year.

The Union housing and urban affairs ministry — the nodal ministry for implementing PMAY-Urban — is also working on a plan to provide relief on home loans to eligible beneficiaries in urban areas.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the government campaigned on affordable housing to connect with poor people in rural areas and the middle-class segment in cities.

Modi, in his Independence Day speech last year, announced that the government was planning a scheme to provide relief on the interest charged on home loans for middle-class families in urban areas. The PM, speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, said, “Middle-class families are dreaming of their own house. We are coming up with a plan for that also for the coming few years… family members who live in cities but live in rented houses, live in slums, live in chawls, unauthorised colonies (will be covered). We have decided to help (people save) lakhs of rupees by giving relief in the interest of the loan they will take from the bank.” :coffee:

Presenting the 2024-25 interim budget in February this year, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman first announced the decision to construct two crore additional houses in rural areas. “Despite the challenges due to COVID, implementation of PMAY-G continued and we are close to achieving the target of three crore houses. Two crore more houses will be taken up in the next five years to meet the requirement arising from (an) increase in the number of families,” she said at the time. :coffee:

Under PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G), which ended on March 31 this year, 2.95 crore rural beneficiaries have received financial assistance to build houses, and the rural development ministry’s dashboard on the scheme showed 2.62 crore of these houses are complete. On the other hand, 1.19 crore houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-Urban, according to the latest government figures.

Last year, the Modi government also decided to sanction five lakh additional houses to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), launched in November 2023.

Not indus river ......Columbus era folks called Americans Indians. I read India wasn't called by that name until the 18th century

??

indiana ....

Statistics and Social sciences look easy but are difficult. I am from physical sciences background, and this baffles me many times. One thing you should think through is, unlike physical sciences, not all variables in a process are obvious and this can produce misleading conclusions. In the statistics you cited, there are various factors that prevent quick judgement to conclusions.

1. Indian Americans are a very recent demographic. Hence, they are highly selected, based on skill level, compared to a random sample of Indian people in India. :)
2. The population tends to be younger, male and better educated than both random sample of people of India and U.S. Hence you see statistics that don't represent average persons.
3. Being predominantly younger cohort, there is lesser 'burden' of older, retired, sick/infirm persons who can't work and earn a higher income.
4. Being highly selected, there are fewer cases of persons with social dysfunction like criminality, addiction etc.,

To draw a good comparison, you should wait for the data to smooth out after a few generations. If you do so, the results will be less dramatic though they are likely to be more impressive than average U.S. persons due to initial selection and continuing advantages it may provide.

sir, only those goes for MNCs and to privates firms, or to US-west, who don get job in Government firms in India.
i mean, those who finally chose to go for private MNCs and to US-EU, are second grade people of India :)

its the 2nd grade workers of India who dont get government jobs and then they finally have to move for private MNCs and to US-west :coffee:

If 'Government firms' and 'government jobs' are filled by First Grade people, why is Indian government not functioning as well as Japan or Singapore? You showed a table that has Indian-Americans doing better than Korean-Americans and Vietnamese-Americans for example. But I think Korean and Vietnamese government workers are functioning better than Indian government workers.

sir, I would say that Indian government is functioning well :)

we find different infrastructure - industrial projects in India which are well being operated by Indian government sectors.
here, we heard Chinese engineers helping Pakistani projects, have you ever heard the same for India-Russia? Indian different projects are supported by Indian government firms and their engineers....

one example, now India is listed among Newly Industrialised Countries, its something better than Japan or Singapore, i think. I would say, only China exceeds India in NICs ☕

This isn't the flex you think it is

It shows a western system gives Indians economic opportunity that they benefit from

It raises the question why it cannot be created within India by Indians, especially given the old civilization narrative

It also brings into question why the Chinese in decades have created a comparable economic system and that Chinese do go back to China

Ofcourse you will want the analysis to not go that far

here is the details of Indian Middle Class of Asian standard. (y)
how you see growing Middle class of India of Asian standard which is estimated at 31% at present?

The middle class is the fastest-growing major segment of the Indian population in both percentage and absolute terms, rising at 6.3 percent per year between 1995 and 2021. It now represents 31 percent of the population and is expected to be 38 percent by 2031 and 60 percent in 2047. More than one billion Indians will make up the middle-class when India will turn 100. These are the figures from PRICE ICE 3600 surveys based on primary data.

PM Modi announce a concessional credit of $10 billion to Africa that included Nigeria and 50000 scholarships to African students at the India-Africa Forum Summit in 2015. :-) India's line of credit to Africa is close to $9 billion, with projects taking up $7.4 billion. India sent a grant of $10 million to UN to fight Ebola and another $2 million bilaterally to Guinea to tackle the disease.[2]

India was the first Asian country to become a member of the Africa Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF).[11] Between 2002 and 2021, India provided over US$11 billion in concessions to African countries. India donated 150 metric tons of medical aid to 25 African countries, and supplied over 24.7 million doses of COVID vaccines to 42 countries in Africa as of February 2021.[12] :coffee:
