The Kaveri dry engine, even without an afterburner, puts India among the few countries capable of designing, developing, certifying, and inducting a turbofan engine domestically.

The afterburning variant should follow within the next 5–6 years. Even if it has no role in the Tejas Mk1A, it could still find applications in future drones, UCAVs, and bombers.

The trials were conducted in Russia to assess the engine’s performance in extremely cold weather. The target was to achieve 46 kilonewtons (kN) of thrust, equivalent to conditions at an altitude of 13,000 metres. The Kaveri engine achieved 48.5 kN of thrust, exceeding the target.

The Kaveri engine has been under development for the last 40 years, and for the first time, its non-afterburning (dry) variant has been certified. This milestone unlocks significant opportunities, as the engine can now be used to power large unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), stealth drones, and bombers. Furthermore, with the dry engine certified, an afterburning version is the natural next step.

This is the greatest achievements in modern Indian aerospace history, on par with the development of indigenous cryogenic engine technology. it may not receive extensive media coverage, because mainstream media often lacks deep technical context, frequently underestimating the immense complexity of developing fighter jet turbofan engines

The GHATAK UCAV is still about eight years away from operational deployment, which provides ample time to continuously refine and upgrade the Kaveri engine. By then, an afterburning variant of the engine should also be fully developed.

A heavy platform powered by four Kaveri engines, such as a strategic bomber, could become a reality.

Mastering engine technology is the primary breakthrough for India's defense aviation sector. Over the past 40 years, India has already built robust domestic capabilities in airframes, composite materials, avionics, and indigenous missile integration through the Tejas program.

With core propulsion technology now unlocked, developing next-generation platforms becomes significantly more achievable. the certification of the Kaveri dry engine stands as the single most critical milestone in modern Indian aerospace history.

The amount invested in engine development shows its only another vanity project. The metallurgy and able to last thousands of hours is something that they haven't even dipped their toes in. Maybe in another 40yrs I guess or longer.
