Jakarta – At the Indo Defence 2024 Expo & Forum held at JIExpo Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening national capabilities in rocket technology. Through the signing of several strategic cooperation agreements with partners from both domestic and international sectors, PTDI is promoting collaboration to strengthen the independence of the national defense industry and accelerate the mastery of rocket weapon system technologies.


PTDI has a long track record in rocket development and holds an official license from Thales Belgium to produce 70 mm rocket motors. Since 1985, PTDI has successfully produced and delivered more than 43,000 units of Folding Fin Aerial Rocket (FFAR) and Wrap Around Fin Aerial Rocket (WAFAR) 70 mm rockets, with a Local Content Level (TKDN) reaching around 20%-40%.

Its production capacity itself can reach 10,000 units per year. As for the warheads, PTDI has managed to produce more than 40,000 units with a TKDN of 60%-85%, with a production capacity of up to 5,000 units per year. All of these rocket development programs are carried out in Production Area 3, Tasikmalaya, which has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for 70 mm aerial rocket munitions and will continue to be developed with the latest technologies, such as guided rockets, anti-drone warheads, and similar systems.


In terms of certification, in 2019 PTDI obtained the Military Air Weapon Type Certificate (TC) from the Indonesian Defence Airworthiness Authority (IDAA) for several strategic components, such as the Smoke Warhead WD-703 and Motor Rocket RD-7010. In 2021, the company received the same certification for the Motor Rocket RD-702 and Motor Rocket RD-701. These certifications serve as proof that PTDI’s rocket products have met safety and quality standards and are deemed fit for use in supporting the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.

Strengthening Global Alliances, PTDI and LIG Nex1 Sign Weapons System Partnership



Witnessed by the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Donny Ermawan Taufanto, PTDI and LIG Nex1—a leading defense company from South Korea—agreed to a strategic partnership covering joint marketing, sales, co-production, and the integration of weapons systems. This includes lightweight torpedoes and anti-submarine missiles, sonobuoys, 70mm guided rockets, 130mm guided rockets, as well as the Korean GPS-Guided Bomb. All marketing and sales activities for these weapons systems will be focused on Indonesia and the Southeast Asian (ASEAN) region.


This agreement was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was symbolically carried out by PTDI’s Director of Commerce, Technology & Development, Moh Arif Faisal, and LIG Nex1’s Executive Vice President of Global Business Group, Paik Hyung Shik, during the second day of the Indo Defence 2024 Expo & Forum.


This collaboration further strengthens the close bilateral relationship between Indonesia and South Korea in the development of mutually beneficial and future-oriented modern defense systems.

PTDI and PT SAS Aero Sishan Collaborate to Develop the "Merah Putih" Rocket



As part of efforts to strengthen domestic collaboration, PTDI has also agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT SAS Aero Sishan for the development of a 70mm rocket launcher unit and the procurement of test rockets, as well as the development, production, marketing, and maintenance of FFAR 70mm rockets and the Guided Rocket "Merah Putih." This collaboration is expected to enhance local weapons system integration capabilities to strengthen the national defense industry supply chain, and to encourage the achievement of self-reliance in defense equipment (Alutsista).


These various partnerships underscore PTDI’s commitment to strengthening the independence of the national defense industry and building global synergy in support of a resilient and competitive defense system.


“Cooperation with LIG Nex1 from South Korea, as well as PT SAS Aero Sishan domestically, is part of our effort to expand our network of technology alliances, open opportunities for technology transfer, and reinforce the national supply chain. In order to increase local content (TKDN), we want to ensure that every step taken adds value to the national defense industry ecosystem and directly contributes to strengthening domestic technological capacity,” said Moh Arif Faisal, Director of Commerce, Technology & Development at PTDI.

PTDI’s Black Eagle Drone Conducts Test Flight

Jakarta (ANTARA) – PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has conducted a test flight of its domestically produced Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) known as Elang Hitam at West Java International Airport (BIJB) Kertajati, Majalengka, West Java, on Monday (July 28).


The test flight was carried out to evaluate the drone’s range and the advanced technologies embedded in this locally manufactured aircraft.


“This test flight serves as a proof of concept for mastering key technologies in the development of MALE-class UAVs, including system configuration design, automatic flight control systems, and long-range communication systems for MALE-class UAVs,” said Mohammad Arif Faisal, PTDI’s Director of Commerce, Technology & Development, in an official press release received by Antara in Jakarta on Tuesday.


Arif explained that the Elang Hitam drone is designed to perform surveillance and intelligence missions, with an operational duration of up to 24 hours at altitudes reaching 20,000 feet.


With these capabilities, Elang Hitam can be used for military operations such as border reconnaissance and monitoring enemy territory. The drone can also serve in humanitarian missions, such as monitoring disaster sites and searching for victims in challenging terrain.


Furthermore, Arif stated that the flight test was conducted successfully. During the test, Elang Hitam was accompanied by PTDI’s Kodiak aircraft to monitor the drone’s endurance and flight capabilities.


With this test flight, it is hoped that the presence of Indonesia’s domestic defense industry will be further enhanced and recognized internationally.


“This can serve as a statement that Indonesia is capable and ready to stand alongside developed countries in advancing future defense technologies,” said Arif. “We see Elang Hitam as an important foundation for creating a self-reliant and competitive national UAV ecosystem,” he concluded.


The development of the Elang Hitam MALE UAV began in 2015, with a consortium formed in 2017 that includes the Ministry of Defense, the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), the Indonesian Air Force, Bandung Institute of Technology, PT Dirgantara Indonesia, and PT Len Industri. In 2019, the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) joined as a member.


PTDI and BPPT (now merged into the National Research and Innovation Agency, BRIN) successfully constructed the airframe for the Elang Hitam MALE UAV in 2019 and unveiled it to the public at PTDI’s hangar.


However, in 2022, BRIN announced that the Elang Hitam development program would be shifted from a military version to a civilian drone. The head of BRIN at that time, Laksana Tri Handoko, explained that this shift was due to challenges in mastering several key technologies, as well as an unsuccessful flight test in 2021.


Based on the results of the KKIP Plenary Meeting in October 2024, the development of the MALE UAV for military purposes has resumed, with PTDI serving as the lead integrator.
