Jakarta. Indonesia’s National Police (Polri) and the Attorney General’s Office have requested significant budget increases for 2026, citing rising operational demands and the need to strengthen law enforcement across the country.

Polri is seeking an additional Rp 63.7 trillion ($3.9 billion) on top of its indicative budget ceiling of Rp 109.6 trillion ($ 6.7 billion) for 2026. Police Commissioner General Wahyu Hadiningrat, who heads the police’s planning and budgeting division, told lawmakers during a hearing with the House of Representatives’ Commission III on Monday that the additional funds are needed to support new personnel recruitment, increase performance allowances for police and civil servants, and enhance operational readiness.

The proposed budget will also fund operational expansions in new provinces such as Central Papua and Southwest Papua, border security initiatives, and command center maintenance. It will further support capital expenditures, including the procurement of electric vehicles, high-speed patrol boats for border regions, equipment for narcotics and cybercrime investigations, the construction of new police facilities, and housing for officers.

Wahyu emphasized that the additional funding is essential to support Polri’s goals in 2026 and to improve public safety and policing services throughout Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Office has requested an additional Rp 18.5 trillion for 2026 following a sharp reduction in its indicative budget to Rp 8.9 trillion, down from Rp 24.2 trillion in 2025, a 63.2 percent decrease. Acting Deputy Attorney General for Administration Narendra Jatna said the significant budget cut is concerning given the increasing workload in law enforcement, operational needs, and rising institutional performance targets.

Narendra said the indicative budget of Rp 8.9 trillion falls short of the agency’s actual needs, which are estimated at Rp 27.4 trillion, leaving a funding gap of Rp 18.5 trillion. The requested additional funds will be used to support management programs and strengthen legal enforcement and public services, aligning with the 2025–2029 strategic plan, the president’s vision, and the implementation of new laws and national directive programs.

In 2024, the Attorney General’s Office spent Rp 18.7 trillion of its Rp 19.1 trillion budget, or 98.32 percent, while in 2025, it had spent Rp 9.1 trillion, or 37.53 percent of its Rp 24 trillion allocation, as of June 30.
