BANDUNG — A domestically produced Ground Control Intercept (GCI) radar developed by
PT Len Industri has officially entered operational service to strengthen Indonesia’s national air surveillance system.
The radar is the second unit out of 13 GCI radars planned by the Indonesian government.
The handover took place during the delivery ceremony of strategic national defense equipment by Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense to the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) at the Pandawa Apron of
Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, witnessed directly by Indonesian President
Prabowo Subianto.
In an official statement, Prabowo said the addition of new defense equipment represents a strategic step to strengthen Indonesia’s national defense capabilities and deterrence posture.
“We want to ensure that Indonesia’s air, maritime, and land territories remain well protected. Strong defense is the primary requirement for maintaining national stability and sovereignty,” Prabowo said.
The GCI radar is designed to strengthen Indonesia’s national air surveillance network by improving early detection and integrated interception control capabilities.
The radar was officially handed over by PT Len Industri President Director
Joga Dharma Setiawan, accompanied by Director of Business and Cooperation
Irwan Ibrahim.
Joga said the handover reflects Len’s commitment to supporting a modern and integrated national air defense system.
“This GCI radar not only strengthens Indonesia’s national airspace monitoring capabilities, but also demonstrates the domestic defense industry’s ability to master strategic defense technologies. We remain committed to supporting interoperability within the national defense system through reliable and sustainable technological development,” he said.
In addition to radar modernization, Indonesia’s procurement of
Dassault Rafale fighter jets has also helped improve Len’s capabilities in communication interoperability and data link systems through the Rafale offset training program.
Previously, Len’s Link ID capability was mainly focused on communication between warships and surveillance aircraft.
Going forward, the system is expected to evolve to support fighter-to-fighter data link communications, further strengthening the integration of Indonesia’s national air defense network.
Besides the GCI radar and Rafale program, the defense equipment handover ceremony also included several other modern defense platforms such as:
- Airbus A400M Atlas MRTT
- Dassault Falcon 8X
- MBDA Meteor
- AASM Hammer
These systems are intended to enhance the operational readiness of the TNI in responding to future global security challenges.
