I've had this discussion before with other forum members. The Iranian military during the Shah performed poorly despite the huge amounts of equipment given to it.
As far as the economy argument, I get that you're a hyper-capitalist, but high GDP doesn't mean prosperity. GDP was largely driven by oil exports and wealth was concentrated and unequal (just as it is now under IR). Even as stupid as Iranians are, they didn't revolt for fun. It's like how the US has a rising GDP but living standards are going down, food prices are going up, and economic hardship is increasing for the average person while the wealthy now control over 50% of the country's wealth.
