It has/had been a symbiotic relationship. No doubt, Israel served some regional American goals for decades. But with the Fall of the Soviet Union, Israel's importance had greatly diminished. Americans wanted to have a dominant Israel after 1991 but not a rabid dog. Attempts like the Oslo Accords in the 90s, not long after the Soviets fell, were not coincidence: They reflected America's desire to largely disengage from the region to concentrate on other regions of the world. But, of course, Israelis are too Messianic and too expansionist to control themselves.
There had been many reasons for the Americans to support Israel but always far fewer reasons for the Americans to be dragged into Israel's expansionist and Messianic goals.
Yes, absolutely agree that Israel once served a purpose for the Americans, but has now become essentially a parasite using it to do all of its dirty work.
