A few decades ago, when oil prices were below $30/barrel I remember reading stories that the Arabs were deliberately preventing US oil production. At that price it wasn’t viable to produce in the US. The non-stop US attacks on Muslim countries forced oil prices up and allowed the US to become self sufficient. It didn’t matter that every US citizen was now paying a higher price.

Obviously, there’s a sweet spot for oil prices. High enough for investment and higher production and profits, but below the threshold where the unwashed masses will revolt.
