Both sides of the Gulf expect to be able to hold on to their deep differences, but the realization must sink in that neither side can hope to assume uncontested leadership of the whole religious spectrum and have peace at the same time.

ALL sides must give up their dreams of such supremacy and learn to co-exist, without proxies and without preaching hatred for the other. That is a tall order indeed.

Nope nothing of the sort. Talks require all parties to agree to a middle ground. There can be no middle ground when you are bombing someone whilst pretending to talk to them.
