Even now, as President Trump alternately taunts, threatens and tries to negotiate with the leadership in Tehran, Israel is left on the sidelines. It is forced to accept whatever Washington decides — as when it received a scolding for a furious wave of airstrikes on Beirut on Wednesday that Iran protested was a violation of the day-old cease-fire.
Barely a third of Israelis believe that when Israel and the United States disagree, Israel can act on its own judgment, according to a an opinion poll released Sunday by the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.
A separate poll also released Sunday by Agam Institute and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that three times as many Israelis see the war as a failure than a victory. Some 70 percent believe the cease-fire reflects an American concession to Iran, and two-thirds oppose it.
Many Israelis have become pessimistic, fatigued, disillusioned and distrustful of the information that they are receiving, the Agam-Hebrew University survey found.
It all adds up to a sense that this victory isn’t much of a victory at all, said Yaakov Katz, an Israeli analyst and co-founder of the Middle East-America Dialogue.
“What’s the Israeli story today?” he said. “It’s a narrative of a country that’s constantly fighting, and presents no alternatives except for more war.”

While speaking to the BBC radio, Keir Starmer said Britain will not join the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing “We are not supporting the blockade” and that the UK “is not getting dragged in” to the US-Israel war on Iran. He emphasized the priority is reopening the strait, noting it is “vital that we get the strait open and fully open,” as roughly 20% of global oil flows pass through the key waterway.
The move has drawn wider criticism from US allies and global powers, with France, Spain, and Turkiye opposing the blockade and calling for renewed diplomacy, while China warned against escalation and urged both sides to maintain stability.
The US military has said it will enforce a blockade on Iranian ports while allowing transit through the strait for non-Iranian destinations, though questions remain over how it would be implemented.

UN pushes plan to secure fertilizer shipments through Strait of Hormuz

A diplomatic effort is underway around a UN-backed proposal aimed at guaranteeing safe passage for fertilizer shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the UN said on Monday. A source familiar with the talks told Reuters that the initiative has gained urgency due to mounting shortages.
The source noted that some farmers in Latin America are already abandoning second corn plantings, while growers in Africa are facing a narrow window before potentially severe yield losses due to fertilizer shortages.
“Extensive meetings” have been held in New York over the past two weeks involving relevant member states to design and implement the mechanism, Juliette Touma, communications director at UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), told Reuters.
Touma added that discussions, led by Jorge Moreira da Silva, executive director of the UNOPS, are still ongoing.
