The story: Iran has appointed conservative Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf as special representative to China, filling a role previously held by assassinated national security advisor Ali Larijani. Qalibaf has in recent months also led engagement with the United States, holding historic talks with Vice President JD Vance in Pakistan last month.

Media affiliates of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) say the appointment carries a greater mandate and authority to Qalibaf in the position compared to his predecessors. Importantly, the move also comes as Tehran pursues deeper strategic ties with Beijing in the wake of its war with Israel and the US. It additionally follows Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's recent high-level visit to Beijing.

The coverage: IRGC-affiliated news agencies Fars and Tasnim, citing informed sources, reported on May 17 that Qalibaf had been appointed as Iran's special representative for Chinese affairs.

In a commentary also carried by Fars, conservative newspaper Asr-e Iran situated the appointment within a pattern stretching back to 2019, when Larijani—then serving as parliament speaker—was assigned the same role at a moment of deteriorating trust between Iran and China.
  • "At present, it is expected that this decision will be effective in raising the level of cooperation," the IRGC media affiliate wrote.

  • Fars cautioned, however, that Qalibaf's simultaneous responsibility for the US negotiating track created a specific risk: that China would once again be treated as an instrument of Iran's western policy rather than a strategic partner in its own right.

  • Fars News Agency noted that even the 25-year bilateral strategic partnership agreement had been used as leverage over the Joe Biden administration during talks to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. "It is necessary to ensure that the mistaken perception of the past regarding Iran's view of China is not repeated," Fars wrote, reflecting historical concern and suspicion towards China.
Mojtaba Najafi, a usually well-informed political analyst, identified what he described as a structural pattern in Tehran's approach to Beijing: "emergency pragmatism," in which Iran's China policy becomes more substantive under pressure before drifting when the immediate crisis recedes.
  • "The hope is that this time, given the country's complex circumstances and the necessity of transformation in foreign policy, this path will not be limited to a momentary decision," Najafi wrote.

  • The political analyst also flagged the challenge of domestic coordination, arguing that Qalibaf's first task may be building internal consensus. "If Qalibaf can create a kind of domestic consensus around the China file, he will have effectively covered half the distance," Najafi wrote.
Iranian professor and Amwaj.media contributor Hamidreza Azizi said the significance of Qalibaf’ new responsibility lies less in its procedural details than in who the conservative politician has become within the post-war political structure.
  • "The exact procedure is less important than the appointment itself, because [Qalibaf] is widely regarded as more influential than the president and is considered part of the Islamic Republic's core decision-making circle," Azizi wrote.

He wasn't one of the hostage-takers. That was a bit of propaganda from the Bush era based on a grainy photograph, and the testimony of people that can't tell brown people apart.

Gabbard herself has kept a low profile since the war began, and her office has been cut out of the major national security decisions driving it.

The people Trump hired to keep America out of forever wars are the ones walking out the door.


 
BREAKING: Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff and CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper just landed at US CENTCOM HQ in Florida, as Israel assesses that Trump already made the decision to strike Iran. Cooper last landed at the HQ on Feb 26, two days before the war began, which would put it on Friday.

A statement clarified this is purely operational and not tied to the Special Operations Forces conference happening in Florida this week, where neither will speak.
