If it's unlikely to change Iran's core demands, and inevitably results in some of his GCC buddies energy fields blown up, why is he pursuing it ??

The idea of hitting Pickaxe mountain and declaring victory made a lot more sense.

If it's unlikely to change Iran's core demands, and inevitably results in some of his GCC buddies energy fields blown up, why is he pursuing it ??

Israel is running the show. It doesn't want any competitors on scientific level, military or even economic. GCC states in longer term if they play their cards right have big economic and investment potential. Israel wants to strike two birds with one stone.

They're still somewhat struggling to get Trump to do exactly what they want. Partially because some US political and military officials are in private showing resistance against Israel. Delivering that to Trump in ways he understands without outright revealing it's resistance against Israel.

Iran had two Supreme Leaders that belonged to the wrong periods of time.

When Iran needed a peace seeking SL it got Khomeini who kept an unnecessary war going.

When Iran needed a war and strong defiant supreme leader it got Khamenai who tried to avoid war at all cost and failed to deter the enemy.

Khomeini's stubbornness guaranteed Iran's security for decades. The US refused to attack Iran after the Iraq-Iran war because they knew Iran wouldn't give up easily. That was Khomeini's legacy.

Khamenei was merely a weak moron that turned Iran into a Russian satellite state and crippled the progress of our nuclear and missile programs.
