Instead of outdated coastal radars Iran can build something similar to the anti air EO-IIR complex to detect surface vessels. Ships have a large infrared signature and move slow. A much smaller(so more mobile) imaging infrared system would be able to detect ships. A laser or a radar range finder can get the distance info.

Another mistake is installing those long rane large radars and thinking the area is secured and forgetting about them. It is very easy to destroy radars once they are located and it is easy to locate them. The bigger the radars the more difficult to move them and reinstall.

Any air defense asset has to be moved every hour and re installed in another location. Even smaller EO-IIR systems need to be moved every hour because satellite pictures can show their position. Otherwise it is normal that they will be detected and destroyed. Remaining static targets like radars around Hurmuz would possibly be targeted tonight if they are not moved elsewhere.

detect radars is a instant thing, why move it? as soon is turned on the new location is known.

But a lot of them have risen up and they've been killed by the thousands
Just a small point. This "risen up" is rather subjective phraseology.

I don't know if Mossad sponsorship, Afghan enablement, and Pahlavist violence against security forces and civilians can really count as some organic form of "rising up".

Iran likely already has optical telescopes on high elevation overlooking the strait.

That optical telescope or sensors doesn’t tell you who the ship is. It tells you it’s a ship, maybe you can tell it’s a tanker if optics are strong enough, but not what kind of fuel it’s carrying or who operates it or where it came from.

Also the radar is used to guide the cruise missile or drone to the target until its seeker turns on. Unlike Ukraine, iran doesn’t have access to Starlink to solve this problem by just using optical drones to hit the target.

I still believe this isn’t due to a complete lack of Iranian detection capability and more due to a lack of Iranian will.

Damn I know most of that is sea corrosion but damn I thought those ships were invincible looks like it’s barely standing on its last leg…..again I know sea corroded ships but looks really bad

Longer range radars are like that. The powerful it is the easier it is to detect them almost at the instant they are opened. But Straits is 40-100km area so a smaller radar can use weaker signals and other techiniques like fmcw do the job with a much less peak signal power hiding in background radio noise and be harder to locate by enemy elint.

Also locating them is done by flying ew platforms and they dont continously fly around the straits. Drones fly frequently like the predator around straits with ew pods but those are good for detecting those stronger radars. So only in an area like SoH and using lpi radars like fmcw radar can do the job if it is moved around every hour. If it doesnt move satellites photos would detect them anyways and it will be destroyed by cruise missile swarm or similar.

Instead of large anti air radars, I would favor passive radars on the frontline that use reflections of signals coming from fm transmitters deep inside the country. Latest models are somewhat accurate but if Iran has them or is capable of building them under wartime environment is another issue.

Just like anti air application guiding missiles against planes it needs both direction and range data. This can be done with a laser range finder or a radar range finder and use optics-IIR to detect the bearing. Since it is almost a 2d environment for detecting ships 2 side by side coastal optical sensors can crudely give range info as well calculating it from difference of the detection angle.

But identification and missile guidance is difficult as you said. maybe after detection by optics and laser range finder then briefly opening the mobile radar to detect and guide the missiles and radar moving somewhere else immediately after the attack. Passive sensors dont need to move as frequently if they are in camofulaged positions. But still they need to be relocated periodically because of spy satellites above and eventually the positions will be attacked after detection by spy satellites.

LOL......no. Lincoln is a 47 year old ship (since commissioning) that has seen countless deployments; more than I care to list. This one just happens to be its longest.

Yes, I'm appalled at the condition and now wonder about the mechanicals. That is what you get after extended deployments. But that all can be addressed in DD.

Come back to us with how great the Chinese carriers are after 47 years of service and countless deployments around the world. We already have an idea what British, Russian, and Indian carriers are like.

Pete Hegseth is proposing to paint the carrier brown to blend in the rust and enhanced visual appeal for future extended deployments. Trump wasnt happy with the plan and wanted Orange paint as a colour resembling closest to rust and his preferred tone of skin colour.
