Have you considered the possibility that the US Navy eventually reduces its presence in the Middle East due to operation costs and exhaustion but other countries get emboldened enough, after South Korea's recent move, to replace some of the US assets in the region?

The soviets fell to a trap when they built the nuke in early 50s to counter the US?

Did China fall to a trap when they developed a nuke, when western propaganda had mao on same leve as isis? But nixo. Went there and normalized after they tested nukes?

It is not that straightforward. Presumably, a radar shield still exists. Tel Aviv undoubtedly retains substantial interceptors BUT also the most potent offensive forces in the region to immediately counterattack.

So why would Iran fire salvos that are (a) STILL likely to get intercepted and (b) likely to provoke a devastating counterattack?

Iran seems to be playing as well as it possibly can for now. It's making the cost of defending Israel unbearable for other nations but yhe trade off is that the problem of besiegement remains for Iran - their economy is shot to pieces. I suspect Iran will only target Israel directly if they really are at the end of the line.

The Houthis are a different matter - they are mad enough to do as they please any day of any week.

There are plenty of clerics that believe nuclear weapons are either permissible or even obligatory for Iran.
