IAEA warns of possible contamination at Iran nuclear site​

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog says there’s a possibility of both radiological and chemical contamination within Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz after Israeli air strikes.

Rafael Grossi said the main concern is the chemical toxicity of a gas called uranium hexafluoride, which is the result of fluorine mixed with the uranium during enrichment. It is volatile, will quickly corrode, can burn the skin and is especially deadly if inhaled.

Without gathering information at the site, the International Atomic Energy Agency “cannot accurately assess the radiological conditions and potential impacts on the population and the environment and cannot provide the necessary assistance”, Grossi said.

UN inspectors will remain in Iran and inspect the nuclear facilities “as soon as safety conditions allow”, he said.

Muttaqi, Araghchi Hold Talks as Iran–Israel Tensions Escalate​

Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

In a statement on Monday (June 16), the Taliban Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Muttaqi strongly condemned Israel’s strikes on Iran, describing them as a clear breach of international law and a violation of Iran’s national sovereignty.

Muttaqi reportedly expressed solidarity with Tehran and conveyed the Taliban’s willingness to assist in the safe transit of remaining Iranian pilgrims from Saudi Arabia via Afghanistan.

According to the Taliban’s statement, Araghchi welcomed the condemnation and expressed appreciation for the offer of support. He was quoted as describing Afghanistan as a “friendly and compassionate neighbor” to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Earlier on Friday, following the start of Israeli military action, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid had also condemned the attacks, calling them a “flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of international law, including national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
