US President Donald Trump took a gamble by inserting the US into the worsening conflict between Israel and Iran, but it may have paid off - at least for now.

Trump announced on Monday evening that the two countries had agreed to a ceasefire that he said could lead to a lasting peace.

If the American president has in fact ended what he labelled the "12 Day War", it would make for a significant step back from the brink of a conflict that seemed on the verge of engulfing the region, along with pulling America further in after US airstrikes hit Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday.

"Provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a statement, "we have no intention to continue our response afterwards."

The Israeli government later said it agreed to the proposal after "achieving the objectives" of its attacks on Iran.

The two parties appeared to be on the verge of turning down the heat as the 04:00 (00:30 GMT) deadline arrived in Tehran, and the Israeli attacks reportedly came to a halt.

But the fragility of the agreement was on full display just two hours later, when Israel's defence minister accused Iran of violating the ceasefire and vowed to respond forcefully. Iran, meanwhile, denied any violation.

The Trump administration will no doubt be hoping this is a blip, owing to the obvious tensions, and the ceasefire is ultimately respected by both sides.

Trump tells Israel 'do not drop those bombs'

US President Donald Trump has just issued a warning to Israel on his Truth Social platform. He says the country should not carry out strikes.

The US president writes: "ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!"

The warning comes after Trump announced a truce between Iran and Israel, which came into effect early this morning. Israel said it had agreed to the proposal, while Iran said it would stop attacking if Israel did the same.

Israel's military subsequently said it had intercepted a missile launched by Iran. Tehran denied fresh attacks.
 

Iran's health minister says 606 killed in Israeli strikes - report​

Iran's health minister says 606 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since 13 June, Iranian media report.

More than 5,000 people have been injured and are receiving medical care, Mohammad Reza Zafarghani says.

The minister also says Iran has seen its worst attacks in the past 24 hours, with 107 people killed.

I’ve been speaking to people living near the site of this morning’s explosion in southern Israel.

Inbal Cohen was at her apartment about 1km (0.6 miles) away from the building that was hit when she heard the missile alert and headed to a shelter.

She says the sound of the explosion was like nothing she had ever heard before.

“It was scary. So scary,” she tells me. The shop she runs is opposite the site of the explosion and the windows there have shattered, but she says she is relieved there is not more significant damage.

Nearby, I speak to 61-year-old Shimon Hagi. “It was a really big blast,” he says. “We hope this is the last one.”

He says he has mixed feelings about Israel’s strikes in Iran but believes they “had no other option”.

“We will see [if Israel has done enough]. My hope is that the [Iranian] regime will fall,” he adds.
