By whom? It seems that Khamenei has lost all of his closest friends over the time. Our only hope is too mass murdering the reformists like Zarif , Rouhani , Flahat Pisheh , The merchant room members ...
By whom? It seems that Khamenei has lost all of his closest friends over the time.
It is theoretically likely that his days are numbered. He is a leader with few friends left, 86 years old, have fought 6 decades of his life for a cause that seems lost now, if history has shown us anything, it's that situations like this don't end well.
I can't help but see parallels with the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran in 1941. He is pretty much in the position of Reza Shah now. I admire his strength, but he seems quite lonely now, and seems sidelined lately.
He could at least imprison these people. can't he? He could annul Pezeshkian's presidency, can't he?He has people, but he wants to play nice to reformist who killed so many of his friends ... he is afraid of purging systems and be seen as lunatic killer ...
No, he cannot , power politics is very complex in Iran ... even SL has not such power, due this cryptic power balance that we can't decide about simple things like making nuke.He could at least imprison these people. can't he? He could annul Pezeshkian's presidency, can't he?
Didn't he put Mousavi and Karroubi in house-arrest for nearly 15 years?
I think he has lost all of his close friends. Israel and the West have planned this coup for years, and year after year, they targeted people close to Khamenei to promote the reformists.

But is there a diplomatic route?Maybe a strategic retreat is needed, that would be this rumoured proposal to allow some limited enrichment on Kish Island and to have all sanctions lifted.
Iran needs to rebuild conventionally and economically, having snap back will only grind it down and weaken it further. I dont see any country coming to aid Iran, including Russia or China. Iran seems to be pretty much alone, when the mongols are at your gate its important to remember the lesson of 1218. Better to opt for the diplomatic route when you have fewer cards to play.

West is not interested in deals, there is no possibility of a deal. They want everything for nothing. If you give up enrichment they will want everything else too. Mongols wanted to take the land for themselves, the whites want to slash and burn everything.Maybe a strategic retreat is needed, that would be this rumoured proposal to allow some limited enrichment on Kish Island and to have all sanctions lifted.

This seems like a potential diplomatic off rampBut is there a diplomatic route?
Most people believe that it is either surrender or nuclear deterrence. There is no in-between option. Why would your enemy help you recover when you're at your weakest?
