By whom? It seems that Khamenei has lost all of his closest friends over the time.
It is theoretically likely that his days are numbered. He is a leader with few friends left, 86 years old, have fought 6 decades of his life for a cause that seems lost now, if history has shown us anything, it's that situations like this don't end well.
I can't help but see parallels with the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran in 1941. He is pretty much in the position of Reza Shah now. I admire his strength, but he seems quite lonely now, and seems sidelined lately.
He has people, but he wants to play nice to reformist who killed so many of his friends ... he is afraid of purging systems and be seen as lunatic killer ...
