I have never understood why people believed that, or why Iran was living in some delusion that Russia would be an ally against Israel.

Russia has been solidly Zionist for decades, especially after the fall of the Soviet Union when much of the country's wealth was scooped up by Zionist oligarchs. As you mentioned, almost half of Israelis are of either Russian or East European origin. Putin has joked that Russian is practically the second language in Israel and he always openly reiterates Russia's commitment to Israel's security.

There’s no doubt that supporting the Palestinian cause has cost Iran trillions of dollars. Iran could’ve supported it like other countries like Spain for example, they did not need to get military involved by arming and training all these proxies. The fact of the matter is no country in the nuclear club wants to have another one added .
