It is fascinating how despite having literal oil money, Iran's airforce is a flying museum.

Unless there is an issue on China and Russia's end. I don't see why IRIAF hasn't gone ahead with J-10/Su-35 for their 4th gen fleet and possibly a few J-35s.

Is it an issue of funds or politics or maybe trust.

Partially historical sanctions, but they were removed for long enough for Iran to make some serious procurements. I would argue imho, it is because of a lack of common sense by the IRI regime.

They would not sell Iran anything worth the investment. The U.S. of today is not what it was 10 years ago. Both Russia and China voted in favor of UN Sanctions 10 years ago. Iran and Russia did not have the strategic relationship they have today. That is the reason why Iran invested in missile tech. The fact of the matter is that Iran went into a heavyweight, 12-round fight with the US and Israel and came out with a strategic win. Iran laid to waste a lot of strategic targets in Israel, so Iran did what no other country except Russia has done to NATO. Iran stood in the kinetic aspect of the war. There is no military option with Iran.

1. Oil is sold under real price to undermine sanctions.

2. You need at least 250 first line fighters and AEW and long range missiles to fight Israelí Air force let alone. If USAF or US Navy or a combination of all three Air corps would intervene that number wouldn't be enough.

3. Russia have treachered before Irán and China did never transferred any first line combat to Irán for (at least) unknown reasons (IMO political interest to other Middle East powers).

4. Deterrence have been reached by missiles and real deterrence was only achievable by this way, because IRIAF would eventually never have more than 250 first line fighters just for answer Israel or other medium power of MENA región.

So your statement It is at least a simplist answer to a economical-historical-political dimensions conundrum.

Nobody wanted a Irán powerful. Starting by Russia and China (that even included Israel in their new Silk Road initiative) and finishing by EU and Israel.

Just now, after russo-ukranian war and after the horrible crimes of Israel both Russia and China are willing to transfer hi end weaponry to Irán. So please stop reducing the problem to just "abandoning" Air force. Irán fought admirably with a hand tied to the back (without Air force).

People keep forgetting the GCC, Israel's ally that is now finally coming out of the closet. The GCC also favors sanctions and opposes arms sales to Iran. Russia and China dont want to spoil their relationships with GCC.
 
I bet if Iran actually does receive a decent amount good fighter jets, then there will be no war.

And that the plan all along was just to further strain Iran's economy by forcing it to boost military spending.

I'm starting to think the way they want to weaken it is not by war but internally, propping up people as usual with fake ant-iran news, sabotages on water and electric facilities until Iranians get fed up and revolt.

So if I'm correct there will be no war just extreme internal pressure.

It was a huge technological leap and showcased the capacity of Iranian engineers, who are among the best in the world today. Right now, IR officials need to STFU and stop the propaganda. The enemy is vicious. No one is impressed with recycled news from a decade ago. In the age of AI and robotics, this revelation is not impressive.

China is never ever delivering any of its latest weapons and especially nothing of the mentioned fighter types! Just forget it.
