Iranian Air Force (IRIAF/IRGC-ASF) | News and Discussions

(1) Light Combat fighter with less MTOW, designed for short ranged missions or CAP does not solve the Iranian prolem. Iranian airspace is being challenged from hundreds of KM beyond the Iranian borders, add Iranian huge geography to that, we need high kinetic energy air superiority fighters with long ranges and high MTOW. A sensor suite of Search-Track capability beyond 200+ KM. Possibly a combination of Radar+IRST with least 4 x LR-BVR in 150+ KM range category. A fleet of SU-35S, SU-30SM with R-37 and fully upgraded F-14AM armed with Fakour-90 can do this job for us. Even a Mig-29M can't do this.
This works just fine for me.

Azerbaijanis are mostly atheist from what I can recall. Religion plays a very small part in their lives.

Azerbaijan has a right to be independent, I don't think Iran should have any interest in taking Azeri territory.

Eas the insult necessary by him? You deleted my comment, which is fair though j do think it was relevant to what was being discussed, but his insult was not removed.

Why is that?

China went where exactly?......
Just to have some level of presence in middle east, PLAN has to have a ineffective base in Djibouti while western Militaries have dozens of bases and footholds on mainland PGCC.
Conquering the world by force? You can't apply other countries' dreams to China. It's not our dream.

PLA Naval Base Djibouti. It's a supply base, not a base of operations. Its mission is to supply the PLA Navy convoys. the PLA Navy convoys are to provide protection for merchant ships as requested by the UN Security Council.
It is completely different from the military bases of Western armies around the world.

Chinese are merchants at best, their defence pacts mean nothing.
Modern China does not establish military alliances with any country.
This is the national policy of modern China. It is closely related to our culture and history.

At present, the only similar treaty in China is the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between China and the DPRK. In July 11, 1961
Article 2 of this treaty (strict article, please translate for yourself)

The DPRK had signed a similar treaty with the USSR, which automatically expired after the collapse of the USSR in 1991. The treaty between China and the DPRK became the only similar treaty in the DPRK. (In special note, Russia signed a similar treaty with the DPRK only in 2024.)

At some point in time, various Western media outlets created a rumor that “the treaty between China and North Korea has lapsed.”
July 2021. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to reporters' questions at a regular press conference that the treaty was still in effect.

The Chinese respect commitments. We do what we promise.

DPRK's GDP is 50 Billion USD at best, they have to import food from China to survive. Iran, despite the sanctions, has ~2 trillion $ GDP PPP with almost 0% external debt. Turkey for comparison has 3.6 Trillion $ GDP but 47 % of that is external debt. Iranian mullah leadership has made terrible mistakes and their time is up but comparing Iran to DPRK is funny at best.
We probably know some unofficial information about the source of North Korea's weapons technology. But that is not relevant to this thread.
If you use GDP to analyze the military talk of DPRK and Iran, it is obviously a huge mistake. No western economics parameter is appropriate for assessing DPRK's economy.
China and Iran have always maintained normal, independent and friendly country relations. We always want to maintain more trade relations (civilian and military) with Iran.
The Bank of Kunlun was specifically established by China in the early years to handle trade settlements with Iran.
But, Iran seems to be deliberately distancing itself from China. The exact reason may be known only to the Iranian top brass.

And by the way I dont see much controversy in J-10 vs SU-35S. If J-10A/B rejection story is true, IRIAF opted for SU-35S instead, which is obviously a better choice, being twin-engine air superiority behemoth. In favor of SU-35S, they rejected J-10A/B, SU-27SM3 and probably did not consider MIG-35 either. Case of chasing best product at best. Instead of focusing on these 4-4+ gen, they should now divert their entire attention to 5th gen from wherever the tech is available.
J-10 series fighter aircraft:

J-10/J-10A/J-10S. ------ Discontinued, total production 300+
Some J-10As have been retired. Some of the remaining J-10As are still in service, but are at the beginning of the awaiting retirement phase. Some J-10S have also been modified and upgraded.

J-10B. ------ Discontinued, total production 58
Upgraded to J-10BG by modification.

J-10C/J-10CE. ------ In production, currently 300+ produced

======================================

Rumor has it that Iran wants to buy the J-10CE, not the J-10A/B.

My personal opinion.
Su-35 is a better choice for Iranian Air Force. j-10CE is not as good as Su-35 for standalone operations.
But. If Iranian Air Force wants to go further, they can consider purchasing J-10CE+J-35 combo. This combo is very much better than Su-35+Su-57 combo.

Ok, tag me when you do.
@emirzad.435

Greetings

I have gathered up what I could on datalinks - in two categories.

Will separate the wheat from the chaff and send the stuff tomorrow.

Because enough influential policy-makers still hold the futile dream of becoming westernized indo-european aryans and accepted by the euro-apes, able to buy fancy European apartments and store their wealth in the banks of the European metropole. They would rather buy from "fellow white" Russians than China.

The air force needs a light weight lower cost fighter to supplement expensive twin engined fighters. This is where you are correct in saying the J-10 and J-35 are the best options theoretically available to Iran. And then develop a domestic attack aircraft similar to JH-7.

I merely said you dont know what you are talking, a harmless comment. Not sure what made you think of it as an insult?

You basically repeated what I said but with details.

- PLAN has an ineffective base in Djibouti while western Militaries have dozens of bases and footholds on mainland PGCC.

I have yet to hear any news report or rumor regarding J-10CE. Last confirmed rumor came like 8 years back from two aviation sources that IRIAF was testing J-10A/B which they rejected in favor of SU-30SM+SU-35S. They also showed interest in JH-7 but probably Chinese refused? Russia was instead offering SU-27SM3 which IRIAF rejected. Deal was cancelled until Russia finally agreed upon Yak-130, SU-30SM, SU-35S in 2021.

The logical way forward for IRIAF will be

YAK-130 AT (arrived)
YAK-130M CAS/CAP (can replace F-7N, F-5E/F, Mirage-F1)
SU-30SM (possible)
SU-35S (arrived)
SU-57 (has to be acquired)
MIG-29SMT upgradation
SU-24MK2 upgradation
F-14A-AM conversion
Kowsar AT/CAP/CAS

This is a good package if integrated with IADS. I am not against Chinese fighters, I am just in favor of one family/origin to save maintance $ and TOT. If its Russia then so be it. In an alternative universe Iran could go for JL-15, J-10, J-35.

Because enough influential policy-makers still hold the futile dream of becoming westernized indo-european aryans and accepted by the euro-apes, able to buy fancy European apartments and store their wealth in the banks of the European metropole. They would rather buy from "fellow white" Russians than China.

Is thay why most of our passive AD assets, almsot entire AShCM TOTs, came from China? I am not even talking about Chinese fighters and tech (F-7N, Azaraksh, Kowsar/Azaraksh-II), IRGCN missile crafts etc.

The air force needs a light weight lower cost fighter to supplement expensive twin engined fighters.

Facing challenge of ALBMs being lobbed at Iran from hundreds of KM away, light fighter provides ZERO advantage to IRIAF. At best it would fly a useless CAP inside IADS. A drone can do that job.

This is where you are correct in saying the J-10 and J-35 are the best options theoretically available to Iran.

J-35 esp if Trump-Russia nexus again throws Iran under the bus and SU-35S order is halted.

And then develop a domestic attack aircraft similar to JH-7.

A fully upgraded/overhauled F-4E/D Dowran = JH-7. Ask me how.

Some good signs.
