Iran has RF-4 (recon F-4’s) could they not have used the [upgraded] cameras on these planes to do flybys to find the wreckage in the mins to a few hours after the crash?

Search And Rescue (SAR) is not the same as combat tactical recon.

In SAR, you want as close to real time as possible. All photography captured by the RF-4 must be processed by a different unit. In this mishap, we are looking at a head of state with possible survivor status. Time to process the film?

That is not an issue.

In combat tactical recon, you want to ingress/egress in the shortest route which mean minimum time. But in SAR, you NEED to loiter meaning duration. You can have the RF-4 flying at TO/L speed in circles but you still need to land the jet and process the film. Today's UAV with real time video transmit in digitized format is the better way.

I figured these fighter jets (and others) could use recon target pods to see real time thru all weather capability. The goal would be to find any sign of a fire/crash and relay coordinates. (Not using the 1960’s cameras)

Speed is relative to the altitude and the ground. A flightier jet moving at 800 mph at 40,000 feet can see a lot more terrain for longer than 800 mph at 20,000 feet.

It just all depends on the recon pod tech that Iran has.

The issue is Iran’s MALE drones are still ground control station operated with limited Satcom (low datalink upload).

And sending a MALE drone at 20,000 into a vast mountain range, not sure the ground control station can effectively communicate or get quality video back via that method. Too much scatter/interference unless you manage to park it on a mountain peak as well.

Turkey on the other hand was def using Satcomm.

Some Iranians drones can connect to Satcom for things like navigation and minor data transfer, but I doubt large transfer of datalink upload, which is what you need to transmit high quality live video feed back to the operator.

That is my theory why none of Iran’s big drones (Gaza, Fotros, Kaman-22, etc) were deployed. Who knows maybe they were, but the issue will be sending signal to the drone when it is flying low over a rural mountain range being blocked by land masses.

Even ANKA-S and AKSUNGUR UAVs have SATCOM and SAR Radar Pod

AKINCI UAV can scan an area of max 400 km2 at a time with a thermal camera and detect fires at a distance of max 185 km at the initial stage

And AKINCI is equipped with dual artificial intelligence avionics which supports for signal processing, sensor fusion and situational awareness in real time

Sorry, but if Air Force One go down, the US would probably be in similar, if not the same, problem. Other than poor mission planning and/or mechanical issues, am not going to fault the Iranian Air Force on this mishap.

Ali Bagheri Kani will be the temporary minister of foreign affairs and Mokhber is also the interim president until the elections are held in 2 months.
