Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Russian State Duma (Andrey Kartapolov) on Iran-Russia space cooperation
Q: What are your thoughts on the Russian-Iranian cooperation in space?
A: Well, why not. Iran has moved far in advancing its rocket technology. Should the Islamic Republic of Iran express interest in exploring avenues of space cooperation, such as sending an Iranian astronaut into space aboard a Russian spacecraft or some other space cooperation, it would be obvious what the decision would be.
And yet Iran hasn’t even sent an astronaut into space with Russian cosmonauts or begun preparations. Should tell you all you need to know about “seriousness” of a manned space program in this country.
Rouhani vs Raisi is irrelevant. Neither care about space program or want to take initiative.
IRGC will fire a micro Sat every 3-6 Months (optimistic) and call it a day.
ISA will keep playing around with Simorgh,Sarir, Zuljanah every once in a while to get more funding when it begins to run dry.
This program in 20 years has been underwhelming failure.
To put it in perspective:
compare Iranian missile industry in 2005 and in 2024
or Iranian air defense industry in 2005 to Iranian air defense in 2024
or when Iranian drone industry in 2005 and in 2024.
Now look at the space program. Went from Safir to Simorgh to ______ (Zoljanah? Sarir?)
IRGC is just firing modified BMs to LEO right now. Something they had the capability to do in 2010 if they really wanted, but chose to sit on sidelines while ISA struggled.
