Israel had a bad week in Europe. Does it herald a wider shift in EU relations?

“Hungary’s veto was the only thing preventing the package of sanctions against violent settlers,” said Maya Sion-Tzidkiyahu, the director of the Israel-Europe relations programme at the Mitvim thinktank and a lecturer at the European forum of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

I expect once the [new] Tisza government is in place, that would be one of the first things the EU would like to push, and it should be easy for [Péter] Magyar to say yes. Netanyahu is on the wrong side of history from the perspective of many Europeans, and he is a symbol for Orbán.”

EU officials expect to revive sanctions targeting a small number of extremist settlers once a new Hungarian government takes office next month. Ireland, Spain and Slovenia – among the staunchest supporters of the Palestinian cause in Europe – have called for a discussion of Israel’s human-rights obligations under its association agreement with the EU, when EU foreign ministers meet on Tuesday.

Haaretz published a list of atrocities Israeli soldiers did and saw in Gaza, and the details are stomach churning:

• Soldiers pissing on a bound, blindfolded detainee while laughing and joking about October 7

• Interrogators torturing detainees by tying cable ties around their genitals

• An officer executing an unarmed Palestinian who had surrendered with hands up, then covering it up as a “terrorist killed”

• Widespread excitement in units over “special means” used to kill people in tunnels, while one soldier said it reminded him of the Holocaust

• A tank gunning down five Palestinians crossing a line (four killed), followed by a D9 bulldozer burying the bodies in sand

• Soldiers opening fire on unarmed civilians, including an old man and three teenage boys who turned out to be completely unarmed

• Looting Palestinian homes, burning photos, and urinating on personal belongings for fun

"Hello and peace be upon you all.

As some of you may be aware, I was arrested for the fifth time on 25 March, charged, remanded overnight, and released on bail.

For tweets.

It has become difficult to determine what words or phrases will result in the police knocking on my door and placing me in handcuffs.

But I am not the story. I am one voice out of billions in what is humanity's greatest fight today.

While the genocide in Gaza continues and spreads to Lebanon, we in Britain are criminalised for words.

This Friday, I will appear at the Old Bailey court in London for my first hearing. This is the start of yet another battle for our basic freedoms in the UK.

Thank you all for your support. I have missed you."
