It's not about the distance. It's about the ability to launch so many munitions at such scale,coordinated and succesfuly. Undetected and undeterred. Iran's advantage was the distance in that it had time to launch from all over the country.

However,even Iran could fire these amounts of ballistic and cruise missiles in relatively long breaks. Same with the drones.

It's not as if they could launch 2,000 drones in one hour and 500 ballistic missiles in two hours.

Your numbers remain imaginary and highly theoretical.
 
Iran's disadvantage here is that it uses only very expensive MRBMs. because of long distance 1200-1500 km ... nothing to do with coordination

You can't buy more than 300 air defense missiles with 3 billion euros, and that number would only protect Greece for one day.
Currently we have a lot of old,aging and some still solid good systems. A big amount of them.

Logically,some will keep serving alongside the new Israeli ones. As for the missiles,you can't predict and you can't know. The Armed Forces do not release the exact amount. There's also an option in the deal,for more missiles. But your guess of 300 missiles is illogical,it doesn't even cover all the launchers in full load.

If Greece deploy the Achilles Shield System to Greek mainland then it would be ineffective and unable to protect the islands close to Türkiye.... If they deploy to the islands, they would then fall within the range of all missile systems including guided MLRS and would be easily destroyed

The Greek mainland is 200-250 km away, so Turkish UCAVs can strike all the Greek islands even from Turkish airspace.

Israel plans to “scale up” the export of the layered air-defence system it sold to Greece, with the UAE as its desired buyer, one current and one former US official familiar with ongoing discussions told Middle East Eye.

Talks between Israel and the UAE, taking place alongside the US, are focused on how Israel can address a gap in the Emirates’ “layered defence” capabilities, the current US official told MEE.

Israel’s $3.5bn sale to Greece on Monday is being described as a model for how it can export its systems and design to other partners.

“This is a profit machine for Israel that they are looking to scale up,” the former US official familiar with the matter told MEE.

“Israel’s layered air defence systems are cheaper and more exportable than ours [the US’s],” they added.

The UAE is a prime candidate because it already cooperates on defence with Israel.

The US said that Israel deployed Iron Dome missile defence batteries and technicians to the UAE during the height of fighting with Iran earlier this year. The Financial Times reported that Israel also sent a drone detection platform to the UAE.

MEE revealed in May that the two countries sealed a deal to pursue the joint development and acquisition of weapons systems.

The UAE already operates US-made Patriot and Thaad air defence systems. The Breaking Defence news site reported in 2022 that the UAE also purchased Israel's Barak air defence system.

"[But] the UAE does not have a fully layered air-defence system," the US official told MEE.

Israel and the Mecca Pact​

The discussions underscore how Israel is moving to integrate its technology with strategic partners. Greece and the Republic of Cyprus sit at the western end of a network that includes the UAE and India to the east.

Last month, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey joined together in a mutual defence agreement called the Mecca Pact, which many see as a potential rival to Israel’s partnerships.

Saudi Arabia and its partners say they want to bolster defence cooperation, but have yet to unveil any big ticket items. Neither Turkey nor Pakistan have publicly acknowledged coming to Saudi Arabia’s support as it has faced attacks from Houthi fighters in Yemen.

Exporting air defence systems is complex because they contain many moving parts including command and control systems, sensors, radar, interceptors and launchers. The tiered air defence system that Israel has sold Greece is even more complex because it is designed to address a variety of threats.

Under the deal sealed with Greece, Israel will help design and supply components for an all-encompassing air defence system Greece is developing called Achilles Shield.

Israel’s defence ministry said this is the first time in history it will “supply a complete defense array against a wide range of threats - from ballistic missiles and aerial threats to hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)”.

Greece has purchased Israel's David's Sling and SPYDER systems produced by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the Barak MX system made by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), as well as MMR multi-mission radars for air surveillance, manufactured by IAI unit ELTA Systems.

Greece will be only the second customer for Israel’s David’s Sling after Finland, a fellow Nato member that borders Russia.

The Republic of Cyprus purchased and took delivery of Israel's Barak defence system in December 2024, according to Greek media.

Israel’s reluctance to provide source code and other technical details about the Iron Dome system have also contributed significantly to the Army’s reluctance to keep funding the project. While Iron Dome is perfectly effective within the Israeli radar and datalink ecosystem, in U.S. Army service it would be expected to work with current U.S. Army battlefield radars, also used for Patriot and other systems (as well as the new Sentinel radar). The lack of source code and technical models prevent the Army from judging how effective Iron Dome can integrate with U.S. integrated air defense system. This is ironic, given that United States shared source code with Israel on the F-35 project, allowing Israel to integrate their own air-to-air missiles and air networks onto the fighter and partially funded its development.

About the source code of the “Achilles Shield”🧵🪡

The “Achilles Shield” is not a stand-alone weapon system, but an interconnected architecture of sensors, command-control and interceptors, in which the operational value arises mainly from the integration of the individual layers.

At the surveillance and detection level, a central role can be taken by radars of the EL/M-2084 MMR/MS-MMR family, S-band AESA, with the ability to simultaneously monitor airspace, track ballistic targets and locate firing positions. However, they do not necessarily constitute the organic sensor of each individual system.The essence lies in the ability to share data and create a single operational picture.

The upper tier of tactical interception is composed of the David’s Sling/Stunner, with the Golden Almond as the artillery command element. The Stunner is intended mainly for short/medium range ballistic missiles, heavy rockets, cruise missiles and air targets, offering an interception capability beyond the classic A/A envelope.

The middle tier can be based on the Barak MX, with different interceptor versions for different ranges and threat profiles. It is complemented by the corresponding BMC command and control system, allowing target distribution between the available operators.

The lower tier includes systems such as SPYDER, with Python-5 and I-Derby, while to deal with small UAVs and low-trace threats, specialized solutions such as the Drone Dome are added.

The decisive element, therefore, is not the simple juxtaposition of Israeli systems, but the national C2/Battle Management level.The fusion of data from ground and naval sensors, aircraft, existing Greek air defense systems and future sensors, so that the most suitable available interceptor takes on the target regardless of its organic sensor.

Where does the code actually sit?
There is no “one” source code. There are six software anchors with different commercial value and different national weight. The confusion in the public debate begins precisely from the identification of all layers with the same word.In layer A is the firmware of the antenna and the radio frequency chain of the EL/M-2084. This is where the control of the GaN T/R modules, the phase and amplitude adjustment, the programming of the lobes, the energy distribution between the surveillance lobes and the fire control lobes, the smooth degradation when elements of the AESA array fail and the thermal management of the duty cycle. This layer is not an operator application. It is how the radar maintains performance in the field. Its development time is measured in years of laboratory and thousands of hours of testing. It is not granted, we do not need it! Since of course we are talking about procurement and not Under License production, that would change the matter…

In layer B sit the waveforms, signal processing and ECCM. This is where the family of waveforms for surveillance, track-while-scan, ballistic indication and weapon location, ground and sea noise rejection techniques, clutter mapping for the Aegean with islands, ducting and wind turbines, separation of UAVs (low RCS) from birds and parasites, as well as defense against spoofing, DRFM (Koral type), barrage, spot and blinking jammers belong. Target classification by micro-Doppler and kinematics completes the core. This layer is the operational genetic material of the manufacturer. It has been tuned with real Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Barak jamming. If delivered as a source, the adversary is not obliged to break the radar in the field. It designs jammers and decoys on the same waveforms and the same classification logic. That is why it is not given as a full source even to a close ally…The precedent of the refusal to the United States military on Iron Dome confirms this. 1/n⬇️

Layer C is where tracking, fusion, and target discrimination work. This is where the multiple trajectory hypothesis is generated, radar fusion with IFF and passive sensors in the MS-MMR version, warhead separation from decoys and debris on a ballistic trajectory, and impact point and launch point prediction are done. In operational terms, this layer decides whether a track is worth a Stunner or remains noise. Technically, these are filters, motion models, and confidence tables that have been calibrated with war data.Not given.

Layer D houses the battery BMC. In David’s Sling, this is called Golden Almond, in Barak MX, it is called Barak BMC, and in SPYDER, it takes the form of a battery command center, analogous to the mPrest BMC of Iron Dome. Here the aerial image is converted into a firing decision, launcher command and missile update. The layer contains engagement rules, threat prioritization, operator selection, shoot-look-shoot or sequential firing logic, interception point and launch window calculation, artillery load management and operator interface. The operator interface and some configuration files can be customized to the customer. The decision core cannot, because it is both decades of intellectual property and a mirror of the manufacturer-user's air defense doctrine.

In layer E sit the missile and the datalink. The Stunner, Barak and Python-5 / I-Derby include midcourse updates from the ground radar, the Stunner tri-directional datalink, the dual seeker logic with millimeter wave radar and electro-optical channel, the final hit-to-kill maneuver, the seeker IRCCM and ECCM, as well as the cryptographic keys and anti-spoofing protection of the link. This is an in-flight weapon. Full source of the seeker and guidance is not provided to an export customer. David’s Sling has an additional American Raytheon footprint and ITAR restrictions from the PAAC-4 Skyceptor.Even if Tel Aviv were to accept deeper disclosure, the US retains the ability to engage.

At layer F is the national C2. This is the only level at which the source code claim has substantial operational meaning for Greece. There the recognized aerial image must be synthesized from EL/M-2084, Patriot radar, Air Control System and naval sensors. There the operator assignment between Stunner, PAC-3, Barak ER, Python-5 and Drone Dome is decided. There the distinction of friendly IFF aircraft, the Link 16 connection and the recording of Greek doctrine, archipelago geography and Air Force rules of engagement are made.If the country does not control this layer, it has modern artillery batteries but a foreign weapon assignment brain.

Israel does not refuse out of commercial narrowness. It refuses because it is both the manufacturer and the first user of the same systems. The same rule applies to the USA in the Patriot and to France in the SAMP/T. Nothing is transferred that, if leaked, reduces the survivability of the same system in the owner's homeland.

The first red line is the full signal processing and ECCM source of the EL/M-2084. Its cost is decades of development and real war data.The risk is that the adversary will design interference and decoys right on top of the Israeli and tomorrow Greek waveforms.

The second red line is the source of the artillery BMC, whether it is called Golden Almond or Barak BMC or an equivalent of SPYDER. Its cost is software that has been trained on thousands of real trajectories. The risk is the disclosure of logical entanglement, timings, automation limits and saturation points.2/n⬇️

The third red line is the seeker, guidance and datalink of the missiles. This is where the most expensive part of the Stunner and Barak is located. If IRCCM, ECCM and hit-to-kill geometry are revealed, the adversary knows the weapon before the first Greek shot.
The fourth red line is the cryptographic material, key management, anti-tamper and the boot chain. If given, the trust of the entire data link collapses. There is no middle ground in this area.

The fifth red line is the calibrated models from real Israeli engagements. This is not just code. This is data sets, error tables and threat signatures. These constitute a national user secret and not an exportable product.

The sixth red line is the right to unilaterally branch the kernel. Even a friendly country that receives full source can, without malicious intent, introduce a “vulnerability” that feeds back into the manufacturer’s network through shared updates….

That’s why Israel did not release Iron Dome source code to the US military, despite heavy US funding for production. Engineering data was provided.The “brain” of the system was not provided.

What can be given away without exposing the architectureThe proper requirement of the staff and industry is not total disclosure of layers A through E. It is contractual dominance of layer F and a consistent communication language downwards.ICDs, APIs and controlled messages can be requested between national C2 and each battery. Golden Almond internal code is not required. A consistent interoperability interface is required. Binary and configuration rights of the national layer may be requested, so that rules of engagement, zones of responsibility boundaries, island cluster priorities and Patriot connection belong to the Hellenic Air Force. Source of the national C2 may be requested when it is developed as a joint program and not as a closed off-the-shelf product. Operator environment, training software, design tools and simulation with Greek topography may be requested. Interface control for third-party Greek sensors, Air Control System, naval radars, Theon electro-optics, passive sensors and C-UAS instruments may be requested. Independent security control of binaries may be requested without delivery of the weapons source. Code custody to a third-party custodian may be requested for continued support if the supplier fails, without the right to freely copy. Twenty-five percent industrial participation is legalized in consoles, cabinets, power supplies, communications, integration benches, electro-optics, cabling, maintenance and possibly launcher parts. It is not legalized in the RF and ECCM core of EL/M-2084.

The formulation that either the source is delivered or the procurement does not proceed is technically untenable when it means Stunner, Golden Almond and the processor of EL/M-2084. The correct staff requirement has a different center of gravity.Full control of the national C2 is required, either as a source or as an equivalent development dominance. Open and contractualized interfaces to all artillery batteries are required. The right to integrate third-party Greek and NATO sensors without permission per software update is required. Greek rules of engagement and Greek geography are required in the assignment software. Independent cyber audit and technical assurance against a key and update level deprecation mechanism is required. This is not backdoor rhetoric. It is control of the update chain. At the same time, it is accepted that layers A to E remain Israeli, just as the Patriot core has remained for years… American!
