Na, In late 80s to mid 90s IRST has a range of at least 80 km on upgradation of Su-27 family of jets today's IRST has a range well beyond 100 km

Hard to believe, the total lense dia is only about 12~15 inches max, I don't think such a small lense can detect infra red signals at that range.

Even Typhoon's PIRATE IRST can detect/track targets 90 miles (167 km) away in tail-chase mode where enemy's engine exhaust nozzle visible to IRST

amazing feat. I guess I need to update my knowledge on irst's some more.
