JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

JF 17 will operate with an RD93 or its variant as long as Kilamov can provide the engine and the spares without delays or any hitch.
Only in the event of a total breakdown of the chain with PAC move to a Chinese engine.
PAC/PAF is happy with RD 93 and its performance and has invested accordingly
If you say that Pakistan is satisfied with the RD93MA, This is not possible, and some interviews with the Pakistan JF17 pilots have clearly mentioned insufficient thrust. Indian pilots also believe that the main problem with the JF17 is insufficient thrust
Currently, it is known that RD93MA is actually a single-engine design version of RD33MK, while RD33MK is actually designed for the MIG29K and MIG35.
RD33MK dry weight reached 1145KG,The thrust reached 88KN
Compared to the basic RD-33, the increase 90KG
RD93MA The engine, based on the RD33MK, increased thrust to 91.2KN, but the weight also increased to 1214KG,
Compared to the basic model's 1055KG dry weight, the RD93Ma的The weight increased by 160kg.

Do you know or have guess what is the max thrust of WS-21 bro?

@NGAD IS THE BEST

The WS-21's greatest advantage is not its thrust, although its thrust is indeed greater than that of the RD93MA, reaching 9500KGF, which is slightly larger than the RD93MA.,

The most important reason is that the WS-21 has redesigned the engine. The high-pressure compressor has been reduced from level 9 to level 7, and the low-pressure compressor has been reduced from level 4 to level 3. The combustion chamber and high-pressure turbine have been redesigned, completely solving the problem of black smoke emission

The biggest advantage of doing this is that the assembly weight of the WS-21 does not exceed 1150KG,
The assembly weight of the RD33 reaches 1221KG, which is 70KG heavier than the WS-21, not to mention the RD93MA, as heavy as a fat pig

thank you very much bro

And apparently engine life also reduced by almost half with lower MTBO. I wonder wouldn't this severely affect availability rates? IAF has struggled a lot with RD33 and AL31 series engines and is the sole reason why LCA was not built around RD-33 series even though the engines are made in India.

Pak has generally, until very recently had pretty solid support with the RD93 and hasnt really had many issues. Pretty smooth sailing actually. They dont buy from Russia, but rather, Ukraine who supports the program.

Hi, I was lucky enough to attend RIAT 2025 last year. I spoke to JF-17 maintenance crews about the RD93. They said they loved that engine and it had great diagnostics. You could pretty much run diagnosics on all the components of the engine. I was told they had evaluated other engines, but were satisfied with the RD93.

Moreover, let's backtrack to two decades ago... Pakistan did not have much choice back in 2003. China's did not have a reliable turbofan engine, and no Western country would even think of supplying an engine to the PAF.
