Calling Indians stupid when their one treaty actually delivered is a strange take..... The Indo-Soviet Treaty of August 71 was a de facto alliance, it kept China out, gave them Soviet vetoes at the UN and covered their invasion, that did more for them than two decades of our SEATO CENTO membership combined.....
And we also had the 1959 bilateral agreement with America, ironically signed in Ankara, Turkey of all places, US promising "appropriate action, including the use of armed forces" in case of aggression against Pakistan..... When Yahya invoked it in December 1971, the State Department argued no binding obligation existed since the action was "as may be mutually agreed upon" ..... the escape hatches in such agreements i was referring to in my earlier post...
And then we had Kennedy's written assurance to Ayub in 1962, that's what Pindi banked on..... In Nov 62, US Ambassador Walter McConaughy handed Ayub a formal aide memoire assuring that the United States would "come to Pakistan's assistance in the event of aggression from India against Pakistan." Explicit, written, and naming India ..... not the Soviets, not China.
Funny part is Nixon actually tilted our way in 71, sent the "Enterprise" into the Bay of Bengal, just to appear to be helping, and it understandably changed nothing on the ground.... And then the US insisted on working under the same bilateral agreement in 1979, to which we complied.....
So spare us the betrayal semantics trying to defend the US, the lesson stands, paper pacts don't fight wars, nations do.....
