KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said that 87 per cent work for the construction of a new canal to supply water from the Hub Dam to Karachi has been completed.

He said that by August 2025, 100 million gallons per day (MDG) water will be supplied to the citizens through this canal.

Inspecting the site of the new canal project at the Hub Dam on Tuesday, the mayor said that the current canal supplying water from the Hub Dam to Karachi was 45 to 46 years old, and due to leakage and seepage, the supply of 100 MGDs of water was not possible.
Unless the "Tanker Mafia" is liquidated, nothing will change. Mysteriously pipelines will burst, linesmen will turn off valves in return for bribes, the rich will get richer, the middle class will slide below the poverty line, life will go on in "Shear e Quaid".......

The World Bank approved $240 million in financing for the Second Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP-2). The project is aimed at providing safely managed water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in Karachi.

According to a statement released by the World Bank on Friday, KWSSIP-2 will be co-financed by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) with $240 million. In addition, there will be a government contribution of $250 million and expected private sector and commercial finance of $269 million.

“Safely managed WASH services are the foundation of public health and quality of life and are central to addressing the stunting crisis in Pakistan,” said Najy Benhassine, World Bank Country Director for Pakistan.

“KWSSIP-2 will expand the scope of investments in bulk water augmentation, water treatment, wastewater treatment and reuse, water distribution, and sewer network rehabilitation. About half of all beneficiaries will be women, 58% will be youth (age 15–24), as well as over half a million people in Katchi Abadis (informal settlements).”

KWSSIP-2
the project builds on KWSSIP-1 and will finance and expand on several investments to strengthen Karachi’s water supply, sewerage, sanitation, and treatment infrastructure throughout the city.

In addition, it will improve water and wastewater infrastructure and help expand safe drinking water and sanitation services in several Katchi Abadis (informal settlements), which will benefit over half a million people.

World Bank stated that in the long-term, the project would lead to reduced cost of using alternative water sources, reduced time spent collecting water, and health benefits from reducing waterborne diseases.

The project will provide a safely managed water supply to nearly 16 million people and sanitation services to nearly 7.5 million people in Karachi by 2030. It will also improve the performance and financial sustainability of KWSC and promote private-sector partnerships in the delivery of WASH services.

This project is the first phase of the World Bank’s Pakistan Urban WASH Services Programme that aims to reach 33.5 million people with safely managed WASH services by 2035.

• Nasir Shah says special economic zones being developed to help Chinese investors set up industries
• Notes Pakistan is preferred destination amid emerging trade opportunities
• Discloses 3.5 cents per unit power tariff approved for planned solar park

KARACHI: The Sindh government is working to develop two special economic zones (SEZs) in Karachi to facilitate the setting up of various industries by Chinese investors in collaboration with local businessmen.

This was disclosed by Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning and Development Syed Nasir Hussain Shah while addressing an event at Expo Centre on Saturday.

The minister said: “Multiple industries are being established in Karachi, the commercial hub of the country, mainly due to shifts in global trade policies for China. We believe that Pakistani businessmen are eager to collaborate with their Chinese counterparts to attract investment in various sectors and enhance exports under the ‘Made-in-Pakistan’ brand.”

Explaining the challenges and opportunities, he said: “Several countries plan to end direct imports from China. But Chinese products could still be indirectly imported via other countries, particularly from Pakistan, which will be the preferred destination for importers and exporters under the emerging trade opportunities.”
