World Population Review: House Size by Country 2026

According to the "China Population Census Yearbook 2020" published by the National Bureau of Statistics last year, detailed data shows that the average living space per person in Chinese households reached 41.76 square meters (approximately 450 square feet), with an average household living space of 111.18 square meters (approximately 1,197 square feet). The average living space per person in urban Chinese households was 36.52 square meters (approximately 393 square feet).

I am surprised Russian average house size is only listed that small as 58 square meters, considering it's a huge country with lots spaces and not too many people.

According to the official Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the average living space varies drastically by housing type. [1, 2, 3]

Average Square Footage by Housing Type
  • Single-Family Detached Homes: 2,264 square feet
  • Single-Family Attached Homes (such as townhouses): 1,615 square feet
  • Apartments (2 to 4 units): 978 square feet
  • Apartments (5 or more units): 905 square feet
  • Mobile Homes: 1,214 square feet
  • All U.S. Homes (Average Overall): 1,818 square feet.

Russia has a huge territory that isn’t really suitable for living. Because of work and life needs, most people gather in the cities. Take Moscow as an example: its population is 13.15 million, which is about one-tenth of Russia's total population.

I think this data is seriously under-sampled. The statisticians probably only counted in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The third-largest city has only 1.63 million people, and the fourth-largest city has only 1.54 million.

Russia is such a big country that if the statisticians were to collect data properly, it would be a massive amount of work.
