MIRANSHAH: A suspected drone attack has destroyed nearly 80 per cent of Government High School Shamazan Kot in the Miami Kabul Khel Dorazinda area of Shewa tehsil in North Waziristan, just days before schools were scheduled to reopen on March 1.

The blast occurred late at night when the school was closed and unoccupied, sparing students and staff from any casualties or injuries, local sources and officials confirmed.

The powerful explosion was heard across the region, spreading fear and panic among residents. District administration officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said investigations are underway to determine the nature of the attack and to confirm whether it was indeed a drone strike or another type of explosion.

Evidence is being collected from the site, while police and security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.

A terrorist commander was killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Paharkhel Pacca area of Lakki Marwat district, police sources said.

The operation was jointly conducted by the police, the CTD, and security forces following information about the presence of terrorists.

Ghaznikhel police station SHO Abdul Muneem Khan said that the law enforcement personnel were engaged in a search and strike operation in the area when they were informed that terrorists had come to a hilly area with the intention of carrying out subversive activities.

“When the fire exchange stopped, the security personnel found the body of a terrorist commander during a search and shifted it to the District Headquarters Hospital at Tajazai”, he maintained.

At least three people, including two policemen, were killed and 15 others injured in a blast from an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Main Rustam Bazaar area in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's Wana on Saturday, according to the police.

The blast targeted a police van when a large number of people were present in the market buying Iftar supplies, according to local sources.

Among the injured were five police personnel, including four sub-inspectors, while several others were reported to be in critical condition, hospital sources said.

The deceased and the injured were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Wana, where an emergency was imposed.

Following the blast, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.

Separately, a powerful explosion at Manjiwala Chowk in the Naurang tehsil of Lakki Marwat left two people dead and seven others injured, according to the police.

According to police, the explosion occurred inside a battery shop belonging to the brother of the local police peace committee's president.

Authorities were still assessing the nature of the explosion. In a preliminary report, police said the blast may have been caused by an IED or possibly a quadcopter.

Both victims succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the hospital.
