Navantia finalizes the definitive agreement with Arabia to build three new corvettes in the Bay of Cádiz

After two years of negotiation, Spain and Saudi Arabia are finalizing a new contract by which Navantia will build three new corvettes in the province of Cádiz. The shipyard run by the company in San Fernando is preparing to manufacture these three vessels, after the successful work carried out in recent years and which has served to strengthen the collaboration between both states.

This is therefore the second contract between Spain and the Government of Saudi Arabia in matters of Naval Defense. This agreement, once signed, will mean a significant workload for the island shipyard.

Representatives of the Spanish-Saudi Maritime Center met in Madrid at a conference held by Navantia, S.A., S.M.E, with the aim of exploring opportunities for cooperation in maritime projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, taking advantage of the visit of Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih to the country.

Saudi Minister of Defense Prince Khaled Bin Salman led a Saudi delegation during an official visit to China on 25/6/2024.

During the visit, Saudi officials discussed with their Chinese counterparts defense cooperation in several fields, including hypersonic missiles.

Another important step Saudi Arabia took in this Direction was the Signing of an MOU with three turkish Defence Companies Aselsan, BaykarTech and Fergani with SAMI(Saudi Arabia Military Industries). SAMI will manufacture Akinci UCAV, ASELFLIR-500 & 600, MURAD AESA Radar in Saudi Arabia. The Cooperation with Fergani is aimed at joint Development of Space Systems.

Hanwha Systems announced an $867 million deal for radars for the Saudi Cheongung-II order​

The deal signed with local defense company LIG-Nex1, the system's manufacturer, is part of a $3.2 billion order announced on February 10 for the Cheongung-II for export to the Middle Eastern country.


This represents the company's second foreign export of the radar system after concluding a deal with the United Arab Emirates in 2022.

Hanwha's (AESA) multi-function radar plays an essential role in intercepting enemy aircraft and ballistic missiles from the ground and in the air.

Cheongung-II is a domestically developed medium-range surface-to-air missile system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles at an altitude of 15 to 40 kilometers (9.3 to 24.9 miles).

The company developed a specialized model for the Middle East of the "Cheongung-II" missile, taking into account the high temperature and sand dust in the desert, and by installing an Active Electronic Scanning Array (AESA) radar on the missile to improve detection and tracking performance.
