Pantsir-S1M​

A newly upgraded variant of the Pantsir-S1 first unveiled in February 2019 as some of the planned models. Experience from deploying the system in Syria was applied during the development of the new modification. It has an upgraded L-band search radar with ability to track up to 40 targets at once and new multi-functional EHF fire-control radar that can engage four targets simultaneously, both fitted with phased antenna arrays. The system uses a new 57E6M-E surface-to-air missile with an increased ceiling from 15 to 18 km (9.3 to 11.2 mi), an engagement range from 20 to 30 km (12 to 19 mi) and a speed of 1,300 to 1,700 m/s (4,700 to 6,100 km/h; 2,900 to 3,800 mph). It has a 25 kg fragmentation warhead, compared to the 20 kg warhead of the standard 57E6-E missile. The first export contract was signed in August 2021..

Outside of the ongoing and impressive steps to develop a potent and highly sophisticated domestic arms industry, I consider the domestic nuclear energy (I include local uranium mining here obviously) sector, domestic ballistic missile program and future RSAF acquisitions and partnerships as the most strategic elements for the country in terms of purely military-related fields.

Not including economic diversification (Vision 2030) and environmental (Green Arabia) elements here.

The sources told “Arab Defense” that the upcoming visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Riyadh in March may witness the announcement of the agreement, which is considered a qualitative shift in defense cooperation between the two countries, and reflects Ankara's endeavor to enhance its presence in the global arms market through the Saudi Gate , Which ranks second among the world's largest arms importers.



Deal details:

Marine and missile systems: Discussions of the supply of Turkish warships are held from the category of "Milji" and air defense systems "Hadar".

Altai tanks: Türkiye is seeking to market its modern tank that competes with its western counterparts, with the possibility of creating a joint production line.

Saudi participation in the "Kaan" program: Options are presented to join Riyadh as a basic financier for the project that entered the stage of the air tests at the beginning of 2023 with a technical support from the British company "BAE Systems".


Cooperation background:

Italy supports Saudi Arabia's accession to the next generation combat program GCAP​

Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni, announced that Italy supports Saudi Arabia's accession to the upcoming GCAP fighters program, which currently includes Italy, Britain and Japan, according to Reuters.



Meloni confirmed during her recent visit to Saudi Arabia that the Kingdom's joining this project, which is worth billions of euros, will take time, noting that the details of the agreement need more discussions between the three institutions.

Meloni explained, during her visit to Bahrain, saying: "We support Saudi Arabia's entry into the program, but that will not be immediate," stressing that the project requires accurate arrangements before joining a fourth country.



The GCAP project (Global Combat Air Programme) is one of the most prominent defensive projects in the world, as it aims to develop an advanced fighter that combines artificial intelligence technologies and modern warplanes. It is expected that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will have a major role in this project, as it will become the only Arab and Islamic state that participates in the manufacture of parts of this latest fighter in the world.

This project is considered a tremendous technical and industrial challenge, as it is required that the participating countries possess huge military industrial capabilities. Saudi Arabia has distinguished capabilities in this field, thanks to the presence of companies specialized in producing military spare parts, electronic systems and their initial materials, which enhances its chances to play a pivotal role in manufacturing this fighter.

The GCAP project is classified as one of the largest international military projects, with the participation of major countries such as the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan, highlighting its strategic importance in promoting future defense capabilities.
