A magnitude-7 earthquake has hit Tibet, killing at least 16 people, injuring 54 and collapsing hundreds of homes in the northern regional city of Nagqu, official media said.

Search and rescue efforts continued after the collapse of at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds, the Nagqu media office said, citing city government officials.

More than 1,600 people from the local county were deployed for rescue efforts. Supplies including 1,000 prefabricated housing units and about 3,000 tents and folding beds as well as torches and winter clothing arrived in the region.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 10.33pm local time on Thursday, with its epicentre 191km (119 miles) east-northeast of Nagqu, in a sparsely populated, high-altitude area of northern Tibet. It put the earthquake’s depth at 18km.

The US agency recorded at least seven aftershocks with magnitude between 4.3 and 5.2, all of them with a depth of 10km, according to its website.

Videos posted by China’s national broadcaster CCTV said showed workers running out of restaurants and objects falling off shelves at supermarkets when the quake struck.

China’s official Xinhua news agency said on Friday that communication in some areas hit by the quake was down. Local railway authorities had taken emergency actions to halt trains passing through the region.

More than 300 police officers had been dispatched for relief work while the regional fire and rescue corps has mobilised almost 350 personnel to the affected areas, Xinhua reported.

Rescue workers clambered through damaged buildings, some with collapsed roofs, footage on CCTV showed.

The earthquake also caused rockfalls that had forced local authorities to close a section of national highway 317, allowing only emergency, rescue and official support vehicles through as crews worked to clear debris, according to Xinhua.

Intermittent snows were expected in the quake region over the next three days, Xinhua said. It was the biggest quake in the region in the past five years, CCTV said.

China’s leader, Xi Jinping, called for all-out efforts in rescue operations and medical relief work.

Nagqu is more than 300km north of Tibet’s capital, Lhasa.

Earthquakes are relatively common in China. In January 2025, at least 126 people were killed in one in Tibet’s rural Tingri county.

In December 2023, a quake in remote Gansu province in north-west China killed at least 134 people, state media said. That quake was China’s deadliest since 2014, when more than 600 people died in the south-western province of Yunnan.

A huge tremor in Sichuan province in 2008 left approximately 90,000 people dead or missing, including about 5,000 schoolchildren.

Incredibly tragic.
My home is located right on the Longmenshan Fault Zone, which is part of a seismic belt formed by the collision of tectonic plates along the Eurasian continental shelf. Just a few days ago—on October 19th—a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck Beichuan, only a few dozen kilometers from where I live. The shaking was quite intense, but for those of us who have long lived in such a seismically active region, this has become a part of everyday life; we don’t feel the slightest bit of panic.

In recent years, China has seen significant improvements in its economy and social welfare. The Chinese government has invested substantial human, material, and financial resources into minimizing the damage caused by natural disasters.

In safer areas, the government has constructed sturdy housing and comprehensive living facilities, while actively encouraging those still residing in remote regions or deep within the mountains to relocate to safer locations.

However, many people have grown accustomed to their traditional way of life and are deeply reluctant to leave their ancestral homes—even though their dwellings are not earthquake-resistant. Furthermore, the extreme remoteness of these areas makes it difficult for national rescue teams to arrive in a timely manner.

The government is also helpless in this situation. while it strives to do everything possible, it remains challenging to fully prevent such outcomes.

According to the frontline emergency command center for the 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Baqen County, Nagqu City, Tibet, no one has been reported missing following three rounds of comprehensive, door-to-door searches. The earthquake has resulted in 16 deaths and 76 injuries.

This means that the list of personnel is essentially finalized.

May China and the Chinese people recover quickly from this tragic incident.

I'm very happy to know Chinese have far better resources and aid package to help Tibet..... India is a poor country and may not be able to help to the scale of china but ultimately I want to see the betterment of our Tibetan brothers and sisters.....

Bro, help the people of Southern Tibet first. Don't discriminate against them. Thank you. 🙏
Are you referring to Tibet border areas near arunachal pradesh or Bhutan and Nepal? I will never even in my wildest dreams discriminate them.... India and Tibet are brothers......

Tibetans in China look down on India a lot. They laugh at the culture of indian cleanliness and lack of civic sense.

A few CIA paid tibetans who fled the border doesn't represent all tibetans lol just like a few CIA sponsored Han Chinese who fled does not represent all Chinese either.

You don't even share similar religion with tibetans, in fact buddhism is much more followed in china than India.

At the end of the day you should focus on your pollution, arsenic water and air quality in your country than worry about China
