India’s attitude to playing sports with Pakistan makes no sense​



Sport is always laced with politics, but rarely does it lose its character as it did in cricket’s Asia Cup 2025. Under warm Dubai skies, India reiterated its continental dominance. The defending champion retained the Asia Cup after Sunday’s (September 28, 2025) final swung India’s way when Pakistan imploded. The western neighbour was placed at 84 for one in 9.4 overs but then lost nine wickets adding just 62 while the Indian spinners prevailed. But India did not have it easy. Chasing 147, its top three were back in the hut while the score read a mere 20. Pakistan again had a chance but India found new heroes in Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube. Tilak’s match-winning unbeaten 69 further highlighted the rich vein of talent coursing through India’s cricketing heart. India’s five-wicket triumph with two deliveries to spare capped a fine Asia Cup campaign in which all games were won and arch-rival Pakistan was humbled thrice. But this was a victory sullied by the antics of the Indian squad. Suryakumar Yadav’s men refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts all through the championship; an even more obnoxious trait was revealed when the victors refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, the Pakistan Cricket Board chief, and also Pakistan Interior Minister. The scars of the Pahalgam terror attack and the angst over Operation Sindoor may linger but this was poor behaviour on the field.

If India felt strongly about playing against Pakistan, then the matches should have been skipped. This lame excuse of playing the neighbour only in multi-team tournaments, while avoiding bilateral fixtures, does not cut ice. Broadcast revenues govern these strategically placed India-Pakistan clashes in all tournaments, conducted by the International Cricket Council or the ACC. India-Pakistan contests always had an edge and it was inevitable due to Partition-trauma and multiple wars. Still in the 1980s, Dilip Vengsarkar and Javed Miandad would go hard against each other on the turf and would have a meal together at night. Punjabi pop, a shared cuisine and even common expletives forged a bond between players split by the Wagah border. But in these times of shrill nationalism, sport has become part of the external noise. In one fell swoop, Suryakumar’s men and petulant Pakistani players have shown that sport can also burn bridges. This was unnecessary. While politics cast a dark shadow on the tournament, India still has some internal assessment to deal with. Suryakumar may have made some smug remarks in press conferences but he cannot hide his poor form in this tournament. The leader cumulatively scored a mere 72. This Indian T20 unit is still a work in progress even as it seizes tournaments.

India and Pakistan had a very feisty hockey rivalry. I always wondered why cricket, in general, captured so much more media attention in both countries, when hockey is the more creative sport.

Hockey lacks the Glamour and the Money which is present in Soccer and Cricket.

Jo dikhta hai wohi bikta hai

Australia mens team probably has more gold medals in Hockey than world cups in Cricket .
Still their is no open bus parade for their Hockey team.

Even India despite wining to consecutive Bronze medals in Hockey, only announced cash rewards for the medal winning team, but it was quickly forgotten and the price Money was way less than average IPL salary for 2 months of cricket
 
It's time ICC should stop putting India Pakistan in same group in ICC and ACC events .

As was the case before 2012,

If they want all groups to be equal , then add Bangladesh or SriLanka with India , their teams are equally strong as compared with Pakistan .

Let Pakistan qualify through Group stages and Play India .

If they are able to Beat SENA Teams and then face off against India , that will show that they are capable enough.

Otherwise these 3-0 beat downs are not doing anything good for Indo Pak rivalry,

Let us be fair. In all countries where both cricket and hockey are big sports (IND, PAK, OZ, GBR etc) cricket has beaten hockey in terms of revenues and general popularity. Obviously, organisers of cricket boards globally have done something right which has led to this state of affairs.

Hockey is the game of rustic people. At least in India. Punjab ke jutt, Jharkhand aur Odisha ke adivasi kheltay hain hockey. No glamour. No ladki. Angreji bhi ni aati. Gully mei hockey khel nahi saktay cricket ki tarah. Kahan se popular hoga. Papa ko bolo hockey stick leni hai to papa kahenge gunda hai kya?

Call me rascist, but indians always nurtured hatred against muslims esp. Pakistanis. The only difference was that congress was able to hide it. RSS couldnt be more open about their hatred.

Given a chance, every single one of them wouldnt hesitate annihilate us.
From their, supposedly, educated elite to the common streetshitter consider us their mortal enemy.

Excellent article by the rational folks at The Hindu, which has frequently been a balanced source of news and opinion from India.

This is essentially what we have been arguing for weeks now:

Broadcast revenues govern these strategically placed India-Pakistan clashes in all tournaments, conducted by the International Cricket Council or the ACC."

Picking and choosing when the sindoor is or isn't posthumously spilled from the wives of the Pahalgam victims is a slap in their faces, especially when broadcast revenues seem to remain the most crucial rate limiting step in the whole decision making calculus.
 
Nobody wants to say it, so i'll say it. Expect more of the same. Every upcoming india Pak cricket match will take place on a slow pitch that decisively benefits a particular style of play.

All 3 games were played in dubai and thats was obviously by design. I think the indians played one game in Abu Dhabi against Oman and everybody saw how that went.

The two sides haven't played a game in Sharjah in over 25 years and we all know why - the indians will NEVER play a major game of cricket against Pakistan in Sharjah ever again.

‘Have never apologised to BCCI nor will I’: Mohsin Naqvi hits back at Indian media reports​

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Asia Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday refuted claims by Indian media that he had apologised to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the trophy handover issue at Sunday’s Asia Cup final.

The closing ceremony of the men’s Asia Cup descended into farce on Sunday as the Indian cricket team refused to collect the winners’ trophy from the ACC chief, marking a historic low in cricketing relations between the two countries. Subsequently, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav complained his side were denied the trophy after winning the Asia Cup.

Later, Indian media alleged that Naqvi had himself refused to hand the trophy over to the Indian team.

Today, several Indian outlets, including IndiaToday, Financial Express and Hindustan Times, reported that Naqvi had now apologised to the BCCI, but that he still refused to hand them the trophy.

Responding to an India Today post about their report on social media platform X, Naqvi stated, “Indian media thrives on lies, not facts. Let me make it absolutely clear: I have done nothing wrong and I have never apologised to the BCCI nor will I ever do so.”

He called the claims “fabricated nonsense” and “cheap propaganda”, saying it was aimed at misleading Indian people.

The PCB chairman slammed India for continuing to “drag politics into cricket, damaging the very spirit of the game”.

“As ACC chairman, I was ready to hand over the trophy that very day and I am still ready now,” he said. “If they truly want it, they are welcome to come to the ACC office and collect it from me.”
