The first new build Dassault Mirage IIIEP was inducted into the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) service in 1967.

The PAF began procuring the Dassault Mirage IIIEP that year, due to the limited range of their existing Shenyang F-6 fighters. The Mirage III then became the PAF's main offensive aircraft.

8th March, 1968

Wing Commander MM Alam led the first batch of six Mirage aircraft into Pakistan’s airspace.

Flying at his wings were Sqn Ldr Hakimullah (served as Chief of the Air Staff from March 1988 to March 1991), Sqn Ldr Farooq F Khan (served as Chief of the Air Staff, from March 1991 to November 1994), Sqn Ldr Farooq Umar (retired as an Air Vice Marshal), Flt Lt Arif Manzoor( embraced Shahadat in Syria in a flying accident), and Flt Lt Akhtar Rao (retired as Wing Commander).

Beautiful aircraft with 50 years of amazing history!! But time will soon come to say good bye to it and send it to museums and monuments.
Hi, well said. The Mirages are beautiful aircraft but their time has passed. They have served the PAF very well from the late 60s all the way to the 2019 Swift Retort strike.

I spoke to PAF personnel at RIAT 2025 and asked them about upgrading the Mirages with RD93 engines, like South Africa had experimented with in the 90s and adding more advanced radars on them. They said the Mirage is an analogue aircraft, and the "juice is simply not worth the squeeze". The time for their retirement has come.
