Nation on the edge

We needed urban planning 30 years ago.

What they have done to Islamabad is nothing short of a tragedy in the making.

These fools think slapping cement tiles and fancy billboards means you become Europe, we are doomed!

Your tier-2/3 cities are ripe to be developed. Get out of the main 3/4, introduce a concerted strategy which interlinks development with agriculture and economic output, the world is changing, get out of the friggin socks and underwear business and step forward.

Our government is still held hostage by friggin APTMA and PASHA running sweatshops and making react frontends.

With every successive government borrowing more than the previous one resulting in higher payments to the local and international lenders (between 45 and 50% of budget) and after that the army not ready to decrease its expenses and lifestyle (between 20-25% of budget) and then a big portion from the remaining budget of 25% being taken by the bureaucracy and politicians, very little, about 10-15 % is left for development. We got a break during Zia era when USA funded the Mujahideen and later during the Musharraf era when USA funded Pakistan to get rid of the Taliban. Now there does not seem any hope of a similar breakthrough in proxy warfare. Trump is singing praises of Pakistan during the Iran crisis but will be swift to criticize and penalize us as he has done with the recent tax. The situation is very difficult to normalize. However, the present government and the establishment has done better than during Imran Khan's time. How long will we play as the little boy of big and small powers and how long is it possible to continue this trend? Most people are confident that we will survive by hook or by crook as long as we serve the interests of foreign powers and they will keep bankrolling us indefinitely. Any idea on how to get out of this mess and how have other countries handled this situation?

You live in the US. You've undoubtedly seen similar where you live. Here in AZ-land, it's getting worse IMO.

The article was a good read. The issues outlined were as I expected. Bureaucratic accountability is non-existent. Let's talk about it while we keep kicking the can down the road is the norm. If the GCC states can produce the bulk of their fresh water via desalinization, there is no reason why Pakistan can't especially in the coastal areas.

As noted in a response to @Fatman17 in another thread, Pakistan is slowly starving to death. Some of Pakistan may die of thirst beforehand.

Karachi is just a travesty.

Having a single government be in charge of the whole province for so long, and even of the city, is a God send in any sane country for development but we squandered it.

I don't know why we make it so hard to do things in our country which are done the world over every day routinely.

Have no fear. California is giving Pakistan a run for its money. And Denver is not far behind.

Your message is heard loud and clear. The questions and challenges are complicated. There are those who are determined for it to remain so.

Even a plant that produces as little as 25M gallons of water per day is significant.

To put a dent in the needs of Karachi, Pakistan would need to invest in a minimum of 3 to 4 plants the size of the one in Haifa. At a cost of USD $350M to $860M. Four plants of that size would be roughly 360-370M gallons of fresh water per day.

On desalination a plant was donated by UAE for Karachi. It was never put to use and it is a piece of junk now. It's all about priorities and mostly wrong ones which don't benefit the people.
