This is about the Regimental culture versus a Mercenary Culture. In the PA ethos, the regiment is there for the shaheeds and the Ghazis, it is the family. The poor Aghani guy was brought to the US with no support system, education or understanding of the culture and was left on his own.

I even knew one Pak Army officer who got compromised during the Balkan conflict. He ended up in the US, because they offered him a green card, he had a heart problem but no health care. He ran a grocery store in North Carolina. Died a miserable death.

Ouch. Was he able to bring family over, or did he die solo?

Pakistan has its work cut out. Many of these US/NATO Afghan translators and spies are still in Pakistan with their families. Often living in premium hotels and villas with the support US and European taxpayers money.

The authorities in Pakistan are going to pay a very hefty penalty if they don't act and repatriate these people very quickly. Repatriate all Afghans whilst Trump is still in office. Once the Democrats return they will start applying pressure on Pakistan.

Have you ever tried FOIA anything? It takes them ages to vet your request, and then those DOJ lawyers will then be dragging their feet and have you wait while they eat their hot dog. It's a painful and long process; the only reason the government releases that much information that quickly is that they want you to know.

It is ultimately just a few 'leaders' on top who make horrible decisions. Afghanistan wasn't that bad but they made horrible choices between 1973 and 1979 and the result is for the world to see. There exist examples in other countries as well where the handful of leadership-or even a single leader--made horrible choices. But in case of Afghanistan, there was no room for error given their already very low human and natural resources.
While one could say 'it is what it is', one must not lose sympathy for the average Afghan because they are the victims of their own 'leadership'. But what to do then except to shut them out of the world, make Afghanistan itself better, and hope that the 40 million Afghans would be on the next rung of human evolution.

Only USA and Pakistan are nuts enough to let losers from other countries come and live with the rest of us. All other nations invite winners only... brain surgeons, rocket scientists, etc.

I believe Afghan refugees from Pakistan should be sent back to Afghanistan with dignity and even some 'pocket money' to help with their new situation. I have never been of those here who accuse the average Afghan for ending up where they are now; to me, History has marched passed them on top of being in a 'nation' with extremely low human and natural resources. They are a victim of their geographical location and low human capital and when their leadership made those horrible choices after 1973, the average Afghan is doomed into foreseeable future. Afghanistan has become the Cancer of Asia as result of various factors.

My guess is that Americans have the good old 'reward' system for the informants, translators, belligerents, collaborators where the Americans have occupying presence and thus the Afghans were brought into America. Wrong decision. The Afghans were not, and did not, turned out to be like the Vietnamese collaborators who were brought in.
As for Pakistan: It was General Zia ul Haq who didn't listen to the advice of some around him in 1979 and let the Afghan refugees proliferate deep inside Pakistan. Iran had a better policy: Restricting the refugees most to the refugee camps. Pakistan has paid a historic price for Zia's follies.
