Yes, but you can only collect taxes from those who have the money to pay them. NYC cannot collect taxes from billionaires and businesses once they flee the city. Mamdani will have to manage the city budget on a tax base of welfare recepients, blue collar workers and students.

Crazy ideas have always had significant minority support. The number of votes Mamdani got in the primary is less than 10% of the voters in the general election. Once people realise how many businesses will flee NYC if he implements his manifesto, they will turn up to vote. If he does win and implements his manifesto, it will devastate the city's economy and Dems nationwide will have to deal with the fallout for decades.

Of course, there are bigoted people who oppose him because of his religion and ethnicity, but that is not why the Democratic establishment wants a mainstream candidate. It is because of his crazy and impractical ideas. If Zohran had a resume like Vivek, for example, he would probably have gotten even Bloomberg's endorsement.

Being able to afford to live in the city you grew up in, even if you bust your behind, working your way through school, is not a radical idea.

We have to parch out the two populations you are looking at, the high trust play by the rules people that support him for the policies on their face, and the low trust behavior of people that want free stuff and don’t contribute back to society. There are far more in the first category, especially amongst his supporters, than in the later, especially amongst the working class. Just look at childcare workers, hence the high cost of child care when the cost is adjusted for the salaries of the workers to be able to afford to live in the city.

So these aren’t a small minority of New Yorkers, but the majority, they want to have a decent life in the best and richest city in the country. Equally, the rich want the city to be the well run, Bloomberg era like island of tranquility for them as well. Satisfied workers with a relatively shot at a decent life makes that possible, as in Scandinavia.

The longer this balance is put off, the more New York will become like European cities, hollowed out, with no middle class and the blame being put on the working class for the decisions of the wealthy and well connected.

A “mainstream” Democrat candidate fails to draw people away from Trump. That is why his primary victory banner said “Afford to Dream”. The other two democratic candidates had their times in governance and they have not been able effectively at moving the needle ENOUGH on housing. So I doubt Mamdani will “radical” and be able to get much of what is promised done. What I not only suspect, but common sense tell all of us, is that he isn’t toeing the line on other issues, which is why he is not seen as “acceptable” or “mainstream”. The tone a Mamdani administration would set in American politics is a shift I suspect the gerentocracy doesn’t want to set in.

Mamdani is not running for national office, so we will see what my fellow residents of New York City think this coming November.

This race is about maintaining the city as a middle class city, and that requires higher taxes on those that benefit most from the city, the wealthy. All the other issues are a sideshow and a distraction.

NJ and CT don’t compare. Even Hollywood is not what is use to be with the movie industry spread out. And the appeal of Texas and Florida is in a decline with the harder shift to the right, making it a less diverse politically place, especially as both places have lost their cost of living advantage. The wealthy echo chambers in NY aren’t affected as much, so in their political circles, NY’s wealthy aren’t ostracized; everyone rides the subway together, and stays out of other’s business.

I know they pay most of the taxes, but they have benefit more than what they have been paying for a long time, which is why they will helm and haw, but will keep living in New York. Many of the richest will find loopholes to living in florida for half a year and a day, but know they WANT to live in New York, but not pay the full taxes otherwise.

You can't push a population to such an extent where living costs become crippling for the majority of ordinary people

If they have trouble putting food on the table

If they have trouble to put a roof over their heads and meet rent

Then at some point they will see the difference between the lives of their own children and the children of the elite

They will see how laws are implemented for them where the ordinary man can't even beat a speeding ticket and the rich and elite can abuse underage girls on a creepy Jew island and the deep state will protect them

Before it becomes unsustainable you need politicians to make amends and change policy to give ordinary people a chance at life
Make housing costs reasonable so they don't have to work 2-3 jobs just to put food on the table

NYC may be okay for singles, but there are so many suburbs that are better to raise a family. Many move to the likes of Greenwich and Short Hills every year.

Mamdani is just going to accelerate the exodus of businesses and the rich that is happening anyway.
