'No work, no pay,' Samsung warns striking Indian workers as dispute escalates

It's not about Chinese workers being paid more, it's about the fact that you should stand with the workers, not the capitalists.

Even if this incident was between Indian workers and Chinese companies, I would support the workers unconditionally. I would prioritize class attributes before state attributes. It is inherently right to fight for the legal rights of vulnerable groups.

If you are not a capitalist, then your behavior not only backstabs your nation, but also your class.
They don't care they just want more jobs for Indians even if they get paid like shit. Foxconn Will be worse than Samsung and they haven't seen it yet.

$140 per month sounds about right for an average Indian worker since they love to brag about being a superpower. Even they love to make fun of bangladeshis for sewing shoes. Lol now go assemble an iPhone for 140 a month

The Chinese pay 20RMB per hour for workers. Chinese per capita GDP is like 5 times that of India by the way.

At this point you should simply don't comment on workers wage in India like even a school bus driver in my state makes more than 3000 RMB.

I can't see the security at my building designing chips, or the cleaning lady planing supply chain logistics.. India needs tons and tons of these lower level jobs and no shame in enticing companies to set up shop here to provide these jobs.. ppl will take up these jobs if they are better than the opportunity they currently have..

One of the labourer I know got his son to complete his engineering degree (he's from Tamil Nadu). The son now works for a MNC in Pune and has been to the US for onsite work.. My electrician has managed to educate his two sons and one of the son works in Bangalore and was sent to Mexico for a project.. his family have no clue where Mexico is and do not even understand that there are places with different time zones.. This is real social mobility and it was the low level job and salary of the father that helped achieve this..

People who talk about socialists/communist paradise where capitalism has to be shunned are usually the well to do who do not understand the real struggle for a decent job/life

I am with workers on this one, they did not come to india beside dirt cheap labor and corrupted state to police workers and keep them in line.
Multinational companies are no different then locust in season.

300 US dollars a month is a low salary for Tamil Nadu that has GDP per capita of over 4000 US dollars. This is roughly 50% more than all Indian average and Tamil Nadu is one of the wealthiest states in India.

@Nilgiri - Are you able to explain what seems like a really low wage for this kind of work in this state?

"according to CITU". They are not some neutral credible authority, they will make a claim as they are active party (to try assert bargaining power any way they can out in the media and so on).

The DMK (and their labour front group) will smooth things over soon, like they have in the past regarding automotive sector disputes.

The 50 cent troll traffic jam, along with starting this thread in the wrong section.....sure are funny though.

Tamil Nadu is one of the most industrial friendly states, it holds the maximum no of Factories in India... It is one of the states with higher incomes and best social Indicators.. the govt will not put up with any communist workers mentality for much time

Lol, Samsung is a blood sucker in India. At least in China Samsung factories have to pay Chinese workers averagely ¥10,675 ( $ 1,525)per month.
China didn't start with that salary. Initially it was all sweat shops without any labour codes. Don't forget that. India is lower on that growth curve right now. You'll obviously pay more after your economy grows.

'No work, no pay,' Samsung warns striking Indian workers as dispute escalates

Summary
  • Samsung dispute with Indian workers over low wages escalates
  • Company warns striking workers of potential termination
  • Samsung says informed workers about policy in line with laws
  • Hundreds of Samsung workers have boycotted work since Sept. 9
CHENNAI, India, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics has warned its striking workers in southern India they will not receive wages if they continue protesting and also face the risk of termination, a company email showed, escalating a dispute between the company and its employees.

Hundreds of workers have disrupted operations and protested in a makeshift tent close to Samsung's (005930.KS), opens new tab home appliances factory near the city of Chennai since Sept. 9. They have been demanding higher wages and recognition of a union at the plant, which contributes roughly a third of Samsung's annual India revenue of $12 billion.

The Samsung strike is one of the biggest in India in recent years and has cast a shadow over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to court foreign investors to "Make in India" and to triple electronics production to $500 billion in six years.

Samsung last week sued the protesting union in a district court, seeking a temporary injunction to restrain sloganeering and making speeches in and around the factory. But the judge on Thursday only called for a swift resolution.

Samsung India's HR team wrote an email to some striking workers on Friday, saying they were engaging in an "illegal strike" and will not be entitled to wages for the period of protest.

"You shall not be entitled to wages from 09.09.2024 to the date you report back to work on 'No work No Pay' basis," said the email, seen by Reuters.

The email also warned that if employees don't return to work within four days, they will need to explain why they "should not be dismissed from service."

Samsung India in a statement said it has informed workers of its policy based on "relevant laws and regulations, and urged them to return to work immediately."
"The safety and wellbeing of our workers are a priority. We remain committed to resolving this issue," the statement added.

At least three striking Samsung workers confirmed to Reuters they received Friday's warning email from the HR team.

The email also said Samsung management had indicated all issues can be resolved by discussions.

The Samsung plant employs roughly 1,800 workers and more than 1,000 of them have been on strike. The factory makes appliances such as refrigerators, TVs and washing machines. Another Samsung plant that makes smartphones in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh has had no unrest.

Samsung workers are earning 25,000 rupees ($300) on average per month, according to powerful labour group CITU that has helped mobilise the factory workers. They are demanding a raise of 36,000 rupees ($430) over three years.

Samsung is not keen to recognize any union backed by a national labour group like CITU, and talks with workers and state officials have not yielded a resolution.
Samsung must be shytting bricks.

How is India so different than China to not allow factory workers to become slaves and work 15 hour shifts for 20ć/ hour.
Weird.
