Was a participant in an outdoor event today down in PHX. Mid afternoon, gentlemen in my age bracket wearing a Marines hat comes up to me. Asks me if I worked for DHL. Responded "retired, why?" I happened to be wearing a DHL t-shirt today so that's what caught his attention.
Turns out he happened to be at BIAP (Baghdad International Airport) in Nov. 2023! He was there the day one of our aircraft was hit by an RPG in the left wing flap. He saw the hit and watched the crew bring it down. Said when the crew landed and exited the aircraft, all they could do was chain smoke. Being the crew was Belgian, I wasn't surprised.
We had a good chat for about 20 minutes and shared where all we were at when we were there.
