Power steering pump broke down on my Police Interceptor Monday night. Third time!

This morning a friend of mine, who works on molding injection machines, and I fixed it ourselves.

Told me the problem and where the leak was. 🤞 we did a much better job than the last two "professional" mechanics.

@AZ_HighCountry

I highly recommend those with the means to research the potential problems with their vehicle(s) to stock up on specialty parts, nuts and bolts, because some auto parts stores no longer stock them.

The Crown Vic Police Interceptor uses a special ATF instead of typical power steering fluid. Only NAPA auto parts carry it at a sane price, $8/quart. One other place, it was a $12/quart!

But good friends are priceless. He drove from Kansas early this morning to help me out.

We talked a bit about the need to find a place where we can live among decent, honorable people.

Not easy nowadays.

Agreed. Having friends like that is priceless.

Regarding parts, one place that is hit or miss is RockAuto. I've had good luck with some of their parts. Others, the parts were junk. Fortunately, on the Toyotas, Toyota didn't do major changes with some of the model years. On the '99, I can got back or forward a couple of years for some of the parts.

Not surprised your Police Vic uses a special ATF fluid given the abuse those cars receive.

Tuesday I was able to get around to changing out the shoes on my wife's 2008. Turns out they didn't need to be done but considering I had just changed out the front pads 6 weeks ago, might as well do it for the rear so that everything is new. Son-in-law helped me. He had never done drum brakes. His vehicles are all disc. I'm at a loss why Toyota had disc / drum. The 99 is the same way.
