My own(limited) theory is that Muslim rule in India barring Tipu Sultan(awkward exception because he was a territorial ruler of Mysore) was largely the rule of elites who either came from outside the subcontinent or insisted they did and Pakistan’s military national story picked the ghazi from the frontier.

Very Off-topic, but him and especially his father were the smartest and most capable leaders of a "state" you'd find anywhere in the subcontinent from the 16th century onward
We have reduced him to a military general or a warrior who fought the British, but he and his father were the only people in the SC at the time who had the foresight to build a nation-state like the Europeans but with Indian characteristics kinda like what the Japanese later did.
All the other leaders just brought officers to train their military and then called it a day. They were the only duo who actually went the extra mile to try and replicate a European nation-state from economics to politics, recruiting, industry etc
His legacy is just reduced to a chimp who fought the British against all odds, but they were far, far!! more capable and smarter than that. They built a proper, functioning nation-state more than capable of giving the British a thrashing.
