, says it has opened a new front in Kandahar, the Taliban’s political heartland and the seat of its supreme leader.
The group claims that on 30 July it struck Taliban forces along the Kandahar–Spin Boldak highway, a strategic artery linking Kandahar to Pakistan. A video said to show the aftermath has circulated online.If sustained, this would mark a major expansion of armed resistance.
Operations in Badakhshan have already challenged Taliban control in the northeast. A second front in Kandahar would place pressure on the movement at both ends of the country and shatter the claim that resistance is confined to the north. Sadat knows the south. As former commander of the 205th Atal Corps, he operated across Kandahar, Helmand and Uruzgan and retains links to military, tribal and security networks associated with the late General Abdul Raziq. He has opposed the Taliban from the outset, rejected accommodation with its leadership and argued that military pressure is essential.
He has also briefed members of the US Senate, Congress and other senior officials on Afghanistan’s security crisis. Kandahar is not just another battlefield. It is the nerve centre of Taliban power. Any sustained armed presence there would be both militarily disruptive and politically humiliating.
The development also weakens the Taliban’s effort to depict resistance as ethnic or regional. Its rule has alienated Afghans across the country through political exclusion, repression, arbitrary detention, restrictions on women, economic hardship and the concentration of power in Kandahar.The decisive question is whether the 30 July attack was a symbolic strike or the first move in a sustained southern campaign. Combined with Badakhshan, it signals a new phase: resistance moving from scattered attacks towards a coordinated national challenge and into the heart of Taliban rule.
