**Honoring a 1965 War Aviator: Maj Gen M.A. Latif**
In 1958, Major General M.A. Latif (Retd.) emerged as one of the early Bengali officers trained as a pilot in Pakistan Army Aviation, mastering the L-19 liaison aircraft and logging thousands of flying hours in service to united Pakistan.
His valor shone during the 1965 Indo-Pak War, where he conducted daring "Anti-Surface Force Campaign" sorties deep into enemy territory for critical intelligence gathering in the Akhnoor sector. On 11 September 1965, his L-19 sustained severe damage from intense enemy fire, yet he exhibited extraordinary skill and courage to execute a safe forced landing at the Akhnoor Operational Area—safeguarding the aircraft and completing his mission amid peril.
A dedicated aviator whose contributions during united Pakistan's pivotal moments continue to inspire generations.
His son, Sohel Latif, shares this heartfelt reflection:
"My father's aircraft L-19 was shot [damaged], the Day I was Born... On the eve of my birthday, I remember my father, Major General M.A. Latif (Retd), who was among the early Bangladeshi pilots enrolled in Pakistan Army Aviation (1958)... May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus."
