December 5, 2024: Pakistan has reportedly agreed to purchase the Chinese-made fifth-generation fighter jet, the Shenyang J-35, and it is expected to be delivered within 24 months.
According to Pakistani media outlet 24 News HD, this acquisition is part of the PAF's efforts to enhance its capabilities and widen the gap between its air force and that of India.
The Shenyang J-35 is expected to outperform advanced Indian fighters, such as the Rafale and Sukhoi Su-30 MKI.
This superiority is expected to remain until India acquires fifth generation fighter jets.
Earlier this year, the Pakistan Air Force signaled its intention to acquire the Shenyang J-35/FC-31 “Gyrfalcon,” developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation of China.
PAF Chief of Staff, Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, said the Shenyang J-35/FC-31 would enter service “soon.”
Negotiations for the purchase of the Shenyang J-35/FC-31 aircraft have reportedly been completed, with PAF pilots already receiving training in China to operate the aircraft.
The acquisition of the Shenyang J-35 has raised concerns in neighboring India, which still relies on 4.5 generation fighters such as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Rafale.
The move underscores Pakistan's commitment to developing its air capabilities while highlighting China's growing role as a defense supplier.
At the recent China Airshow 2024 in Zhuhai, China revealed official images of its second fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Shenyang J-35A.
Designed for air combat and air-to-ground operations, the Shenyang J-35A reflects China's ambition to compete with the United States in stealth fighter development.
With its acquisition of the Shenyang J-35A, China joins the United States as the only two countries to have produced fifth-generation fighters, the Shenyang J-35A and the J-20 “Mighty Dragon,” similar to the American F-35 and F-22 “Raptor.” “.
The inclusion of the Shenyang J-35 into the PAF inventory will complement previous acquisitions of Chinese aircraft, including the J-10C and the jointly developed JF-17.
Analysts said the Shenyang J-35 would replace Pakistan's aging F-16s and Mirage 5s, signaling a shift toward a more modern and diversified air force.
