Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting de-escalation and regional stability while discussing the situation in the Middle East with Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zedong on Thursday.

On Monday, Pakistan took centre stage in a coordinated diplomatic push alongside Turkiye and Egypt for de-escalation, as the trio appeared instrumental in securing a five-day pause of US plans to strike Iranian energy and power infrastructure, officials said, describing the effort as going beyond routine crisis management.

A press release by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that the Chinese ambassador called on the premier at the PM House today. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi, and the foreign secretary were also present, it said.

PM Shehbaz appreciated China’s “steadfast economic support” and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advancing CPEC 2.0, “with a focus on agriculture, industrial cooperation, and priority infrastructure projects”, the PMO statement said.

He also congratulated the Chinese leadership on the successful conclusion of the “Two Sessions” in Beijing and thanked President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi for their warm Pakistan Day greetings.

“Ambassador Jiang commended Pakistan’s economic resilience and reform efforts, and reaffirmed China’s continued support, particularly in trade and investment,” the statement added. “Both sides expressed satisfaction at ongoing exchanges and looked forward to high-level engagements to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.”

PM Shehbaz emphasised “continued close coordination at all levels on issues of mutual interest” while reaffirming the enduring Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, it added.

The premier had said on Tuesday that Pakistan stood “ready and honoured” to host “meaningful and conclusive talks” between the US and Iran.

On Wednesday, he formally pitched Islamabad as a potential venue for negotiations between Iranian and US officials.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will visit China on Tuesday at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to hold in-depth discussions on regional tensions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a post on X on Monday.

"Pakistan and China enjoy an all-weather strategic cooperative partnership, characterised by close coordination and regular consultations on regional and international issues," the Foreign Office said.

The statement stated that within this context of deep cooperation, the visit will allow the two sides to "hold in-depth discussions on regional developments" and global matters of shared concern.

The visit comes as Islamabad concluded a four-nation meeting aimed at promoting dialogue and diplomacy to end hostilities in the Middle East.

Yesterday's meeting concluded with initial discussions reportedly focused on proposals to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping. Foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt landed in Islamabad for the talks. The discussions came as Iran warned the US against launching a ground attack, and global oil prices surged amid continued fighting between Iran, the US, and Israel.

Along with calling for an urgent halt to hostilities, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a post on X, reaffirmed Pakistan’s “strong commitment and resolve to play a positive role in bringing both Iran and the US to the negotiating table,” appreciating Turkiye and Egypt’s “valuable contributions” to the matter.

Dar revealed on Sunday that China extended full support to Islamabad's initiative following his telephonic conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. "Initiating peace talks is no easy task, but it is the only viable path to avoid further casualties and losses," Yi said, according to an official Chinese readout.

"I briefed the visiting brotherly foreign ministers about the prospects of potential US-Iran talks in Islamabad. The visiting foreign ministers expressed their fullest support for this initiative," Dar said in a televised statement after the four-way talks.

"Pakistan will be honoured to host and facilitate meaningful talks between the two sides, for a comprehensive and lasting settlement," Dar said, adding that both Tehran and Washington had expressed confidence in Islamabad's role as a neutral facilitator.

Pakistan and China on Tuesday jointly proposed a five-point initiative aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and broader Middle East, calling for an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians, and urgent diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office on X, the initiative was put forward during a meeting between China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Beijing.

The two sides stressed the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging all parties to prevent the conflict from spreading and to ensure unhindered humanitarian access to war-affected areas.

They also called for the early resumption of peace talks, underlining that dialogue and diplomacy remained the only viable path to resolving disputes.

The statement emphasised the importance of safeguarding the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of Iran and Gulf states, while urging all sides to refrain from the use or threat of force during negotiations.

Highlighting concerns over civilian safety, Pakistan and China underscored the protection of non-military targets, calling on all parties to strictly adhere to international humanitarian law and halt attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, including energy facilities, desalination plants, and peaceful nuclear installations.

The two countries also voiced concern over disruptions to global trade, stressing the need to ensure the security of shipping lanes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz. They called for the safe passage of commercial vessels and the restoration of normal maritime traffic at the earliest.

It also called for the protection of critical infrastructure, including energy facilities, desalination plants, power installations and peaceful nuclear sites.

4. Security of maritime routes
Highlighting the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, both sides called for ensuring the safety of vessels and crew in the area. They urged the restoration of normal maritime traffic and safe passage for commercial shipping at the earliest.

5. Upholding the UN Charter
The initiative called for strengthening multilateralism and reinforcing the central role of the United Nations. It supported efforts to reach a comprehensive peace framework in line with the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

She expressed confidence that the visit would further enhance strategic communication, particularly on developments related to Iran.
