Pakistan Closes Airspace to Taiwanese Airlines in Support of China

Pakistan has barred Taiwanese airlines from flying through its airspace in line with its One-China policy, becoming the first country in the world to take such a step, Bloomberg reported.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed the move, saying only carriers from mainland China are allowed to fly over Pakistan.

Taiwanese Flights Now Rerouted

Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 shows that China Airlines and EVA Air have not flown over Pakistan since the morning of October 25.

Since then, at least a dozen of their flights between Asia and Europe have been routed over Russia instead. The longer routes add flying time and fuel costs on these services.

Both airlines declined to comment on the change. Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration did not comment on the rerouting either, but said it has never banned airlines from flying over Russia.

Stricter Than China Itself

Pakistan’s restriction goes further than Beijing’s own rules, as mainland China still allows Taiwanese airlines to use its airspace.

Islamabad has recognised Beijing as the sole government of China since the early 1950s and does not have formal ties with Taiwan.

The decision reflects the close economic and military relationship between the two countries.

China has invested heavily in Pakistan under its Belt and Road Initiative, while Chinese-made J-10C fighter jets supplied to Pakistan played a role in the 2025 conflict with India.

Pakistan has also kept its airspace closed to Indian airlines since that conflict, a ban that has reportedly cost Indian carriers around $2 billion. Earlier this month, the government extended that ban till November 24.

China allows Taiwanese airlines to fly to Chinese airports

As usual, the clown Khwaja Asif has once again put his foot in the mouth.

If not consulted it would have been a big mistake, but these things are not easy to do you dont just send an email to [email protected] to tell them they cant fly over.

There would have been diplomatic and logistical parts to this as well as liason wiith international orgs and other airlines. To think Pakistan did all that on a whim stretches probability.

It also seems very inline with Chinese foreign policy, are you actually saying Chinese government would be against this?????

Agreed. No way Pakistan did this on a whim and as some misguided attempt to please China.
China prefers to stay in the shadows and achieve their goals without showing their hand.
To the Taiwanese people they show how benevolent they are via their ‘official policies’ but behind the scenes get their closest ally to do this to add credibility of international support for their claim over the island.
You may find other countries close to China follow this example. All with plausible deniability to China.

Well...

As it stands, this whole affair is very likely nothing more than a farce orchestrated by Bloomberg from start to finish. We don’t even know if Pakistan’s Defense Minister actually said these things—let alone whether Pakistan ever truly implemented such measures, even for a single minute.

That is not important.

However, from this thread, we can see the attitudes of many Pakistanis toward incidents of this kind. That is very important!!!

Regardless of your personal views, Chinese culture holds a strong aversion to outsiders interfering in one’s private family affairs—no matter what their stance or position might be.

There is an old Chinese saying: "清官难断家务事(Even an upright official finds it difficult to settle family disputes)." This is closely linked to another cultural maxim: "家丑不可外扬(Family scandals should not be aired in public)."

Consequently, traditional Chinese people are extremely wary of sharing family secrets in public settings. It is very difficult for outsiders to truly grasp what is happening behind closed doors; we regard such matters as strictly private.

China's internal affairs are simply China's domestic matters. Regardless of the position—whether in support or opposition—the Chinese people would not welcome any outside intervention in such matters. The Taiwan question is an internal affair of China. We have the full capability and confidence to resolve it ourselves.

Suppose you get into an argument with your wife—that’s a private domestic matter. But if your good friend gets involved, speaks up for you, and gives your wife a good scolding. How would you feel about that?

Pakistan will help you more to open up to the world, we did it in the past, we will do it again. International affairs / alliances and family matters, that is a very odd comparison.

By your logic, if we vote on any matter in China's favor on international level, that would be interfering with China's affairs? Few days back you wanted to assess if Pakistanis side with Turkiye or Pakistanis side with China? People with honest intentions do not put their friends in difficult situation, but people with an agenda and vendetta will do exactly that.

@Panda_Hi may be he loves China, no problem with that, but he needs to tone down while addressing friends of China. Pakistani people and Pakistani state react in two very different ways.

Michael has his moments. Often he blames his lack of English vocabulary for the misunderstanding. I think his English is just fine.

Embaressing all round

Taiwan is a satellite colony of the Western countries. Pakistan supports one China policy. The ban served as a reminder that Pakistan will stand behind China no matter what.

The Taiwanese are crying rivers LOL Our air space our rules. If we decide to ban their airlines again we can do so with full authority. Taiwan was been warned.

I have already explained this issue to you in my previous comments.

Regarding international affairs, the Chinese people appreciate Pakistan’s support for the Chinese government’s position. However, the Taiwan question is an internal Chinese affair.

I have just looked into this further.

Chinese media outlets have cited a Bloomberg report regarding this move by Pakistan. Even more striking is that *Guangming Daily*—one of the few official Chinese state media outlets to cover the story—also relied on the Bloomberg report.

This clearly indicates that Pakistan did not consult with the relevant Chinese authorities before taking this action. *Guangming Daily* serves as an official mouthpiece for the Chinese government—ranking second only to the *People’s Daily*—and maintains direct communication channels with the highest levels of the Chinese government. They could have easily verified the information with the relevant Chinese state institutions directly, without needing to cite any foreign media. The fact that they reported it in this manner suggests that the relevant Chinese government bodies were unaware of the matter beforehand.
