A side note:
Within the current Kuomintang (KMT), there are effectively three factions:
1. The pro-PRC faction (often referred to as the "pro-unification" faction): This group supports the position that Taiwan is part of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and aligns with the stance of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It is a relatively small circle.
2. The "ROC-realist" faction: This group acknowledges the "One China" principle but maintains that the Republic of China (ROC)—not the PRC—is the legitimate entity. They support engagement and negotiation between the KMT and the PRC, while opposing the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) stance on Taiwanese independence. This is currently the largest faction within the KMT.
3. The "hardline ROC" faction: This group insists that the ROC is the sole legitimate representative of "China." This, too, is a relatively small circle.
The first faction opposes Taiwan relying on American influence, whereas the second and third factions both support leveraging that influence.
Given the current state of the KMT, no leader within the party would dare to openly support the PRC while opposing the United States. Conversely, no KMT leader would dare to openly oppose the PRC either. Such is the reality.
Most ROC-realists are just the evolved faction of the hardliners, because they have realized that is is impossible for them to become the ruling party in China again, so they are either pandering to the DPP or using the strategic ambiguity for more bargaining chips.
My family came from the KMT, I know too much about them.
